   My boyfriend wakes up at 5am every morning, and is out the door by 5:20am. I usually like to set up the coffee the previous night and I wake up with him to flick on the coffee maker so he can pour it into his thermos and leave the house.

   With this coffee maker, our morning routines have been a DREAM. Now we don’t have to grind and prep the night before and I don’t have to wake up at his time to get the coffee ready (although it’s one of my favorite things to do so I can see him off before his day begins), but it saves so much time and effort. The coffee grinding takes less than a minute, and the built-in filter has been so handy to where I don’t need to remember to buy some paper filters during my grocery trips!

   Easy to setup and great for ground coffee I typically buy. Smaller in volume as I’m used to 10-12 cup coffee pots. The grinder is loud and not perfect but it works better when you use paper filters vs the built in. Like all grind and brews this takes more work than your typical coffee maker. This will go into our travel trailer for summer camping trips.

   Just finished setting this coffee maker up and brewing several cups of coffee with it. It is pretty easy to use and I love the fact that you can just toss whole beans, grind them coarse or fine, and then brew your coffee. The hopper that holds and grinds the beans does spill some of the grounds so they do end up in your coffee but usually sink to the bottom so not as big of a concern. All of the parts are either plastic or glass so it does feel slightly cheap but everything appears to work so far. The coffee pot is glass with a plastic handle. You can also throw in already-ground coffee and choose the setting to only brew.

   I ordered this coffee maker because I love the idea of being able to grind and brew all in one. I do not drink a lot of coffee, and whole beans keep fresh longer than ground. I have to say I’m somewhat disappointed by the fact that using the grind-and-brew function results in a decent amount of grounds in the coffee. Even when using pre-ground coffee (there is an option on the front panel to select ground or bean coffee), grounds still make it out as the built-in re-usable filter is open on the bottom to clear the grinding blade and does not seal well. If using it for ground coffee, I did find that I was able to remove the built-in filter and insert a paper filter instead. This works well, but defeats the whole idea of using beans. Cleanup is much easier with the paper filters as well; it is a real pain to get all of the grounds out when using the built-in mesh filter since it has no bottom. You can bang the biggest out in the trash can, but the rest have to be rinsed, and they are not good to put down the drain. One last thing about the grinder: it is loud. If anyone else in the house is sleeping when it starts, they won’t be for long. I did find that you can put in the beans and press start to grind and then immediately hit stop in case you want to pre-grind to avoid the noise issue in the morning. The picture of grounds I included is from doing this with the grind set to fine; there are still some fairly decent chunks in there. The machine itself works well for the most part, with a few exceptions. The capacity is really only 5 (5-ounce) cups. It is a few ounces short of holding a full 30 ounces. Basically, you can make two “normal”-sized mugs of coffee, and that is it. It has a programmable feature to brew automatically on a timer. The strange thing about this feature is that even though it remembers the previously-set time, it forces you to adjust that time in order to go into “auto” mode. So, you can either bump it a minute ahead of the previous time or wrap the minutes around a full hour to keep the same time. But if you just press the Prog button without adjusting the time, no automatic brewing for you. The clock also has another oddity: it switches from AM to PM at 1:00, not 12:00 (see video, stays AM from 11:59 to 12:00). This is a first for me for any clock and defies explanation. If you want to auto-brew coffee at midnight, you must select PM; AM for noon. Since the grind-and-brew feature is a bit of a flop for me, I would recommend a separate grinder and coffee pot myself. I do not think this one is worth the extra money to have it all in one.
