   I was gifted my Fellow Stagg Pour Over [XF] for Christmas. While removing it from its box, the first thing I noticed was that it felt like it would be easy to accidentally drop it. Maybe it’s my old hands that are very smooth, but it made me uneasy holding it. It didn’t take long before I thought of a fix. I took the silicone sleeve off a travel cup that I don’t use and it fits perfectly on the carafe! Now I can handle it with the confidence that it’s not going to slip away and break! I love the coffee it brews – better than the cone method I’ve been using for years.

   I just received my Stagg X pour over system yesterday. I have the kettle, the Ode grinder and wanted to ckmplete my set. I’ve never had issues with previous Fellow purchases until now. I bought the Stagg EKG and Ode grinder at Williams Sonoma. But they didn’t have the pour over kit so I went to coffeemakers.us.com. The inside of the dripper has some paint in it. Now I’m concerned about the overall quality of the product, if such a visible blemish got through quality control. Has anyone experienced the same issues? Is this a Fellow issue or is it because I bought this on coffeemakers.us.com?

   Fellow did a nice job putting this pour over set together. I love the pour over canister — it’s small and compact. The minimalist design is on point. It’s small, making it perfect for traveling, camping, backpacking. Yet, it’s still elegant and robust enough for daily use in the kitchen. The dosing ring and drip cup help keep everything tidy.

   The carafe is a lovely piece of glass. The double-walled glass keeps the coffee hot while keeping the container safe to touch. And it’s so light in the hands, like picking up air. Like the pour over canister, the design is very minimal and svelt. With that design, however, comes a degree of fragility: you have to be careful handling it and storing it. The glass very slick and there are no shapes built into it for a good grip. I feel like careless movement or a bump on my elbow could easily cause me to drop it. So, careful handling is required, but worth it.

   Overall, solid pour over combination. I think it brews a rich, sweet cup of coffee and handles darker roasts well. Ideal for a single person to use, but could brew for a couple. And it’s compact and easy to store. Highly recommended.

   Why I chose this coffee brewer? I’ve been trying to get away from my AeroPress which made pretty good coffee but is made of plastic. Plastic (even if it’s non-BPA) leaches into the boiling hot water that is needed to make good coffee and it makes me feel unhealthy (though more research may be needed to support my “feeling”). I looked at various options but most of them either had some plastic contact (often with boiling hot water) or had other issues. Moka Express, for example, required heavy pre-cleaning to remove white residue that builds up either due to Aluminum construction or mold during storage. French press is great but it requires patience if you want to drink silt-free coffee. And, I like coffee that has been paper-filtered to remove the oils. So, I just about settled for pour over coffee and was about to buy a Chemex glass carafe until I discovered the Fellow Stagg pour-over brewer. I liked that Fellow Stagg XF claimed to be less tedious than a traditional, conical pour-over design. And, the Fellow Stagg dripper was metal instead of plastic. Brewing experience & cleanup I was pleasantly surprised that the construction quality was top notch. Everything from the ratio aid to the glass jug fits nicely with each other. The cleanup was fast too. The coffee filter stores all the wet, used coffee grinds so you can simply pick it up and throw it in the trash. The coffee filter paper is strong enough to support the wet coffee grinds without breaking and it usually doesn’t drip when you’re moving it from the dripper to the trash bin. The jug can handle hot coffee nicely. The outside of the jug does get warm but I was able to hold it without oven mitts and pour the brewed coffee into a cup. The glass jug cleans up nicely too even after you let it sit for a while. The metal components just need a rinse if you don’t let them sit. The storage is nice and compact because the ratio aid and funnel attach into the dripper and you can put plastic wrapped paper filters into the dripper. Pro tip: buy a gooseneck, fast-boiling kettle that has a temperature gauge. Once you use it, you’ll love the precision and it’ll make for better coffee every time. Coffee quality The coffee I made was very good and nearly perfect. I like hot drip coffee and this made the best one I’ve made for myself beating my AeroPress. Some issues 1. The glass jug is deceptively huge! While the measurement says 20oz, the jug can actually hold much more than that. 20oz is near the middle of the jug. The measurements differ wildly for different coffee brewers. In comparison to some other coffee brewers (such as MokaExpress or French press), when Fellow says 20oz, it means way more than 20oz. In hindsight, I should’ve bought the smaller (10oz version) because I was looking to brew only one cup of coffee at a time. 2. The brewed coffee does not stay hot for long. Even though the glass jug comes with a Silicone gasket, it doesn’t keep the coffee hot for more than 5 mins. I recommend brewing just enough so you don’t have any left in the glass jug to get cold. 3. The outer surface of the dripper and ratio aid has an annoying texture. This is obviously a minor nitpicking point. The pictures and videos online appear to show a smooth shiny surface which would be pleasant to hold but not so. The outer surface is rough and weird as if someone designed it to be unpleasant, texturally speaking. 4. I expect that the double-wall glass jug, by the nature of it’s construction, is going weak on the inside. This means exposing the insides to quick temperature differences or dropping a heavy ice cube would probably break it quick. This is something to be careful about. Overall, I think this is a decent investment in coffee if you like good drip/pour-over coffee that is not a hassle to make or clean up after. And, the best part is the lack of plastic touching boiling water.

   Personally, I love this coffee dripper. In studying the book “The Physics of Filter Coffee” by Jonathan Gagne, I found that this dripper offered me the greatest benefits out of all the others. The glass itself is really nice, sleek and double walled. It doesn’t feel cheep at all and is very premium. The entire kits works very well. The maximum brew I think you could get is 12oz and that would be the absolute limit. I brew 23g of coffee at a 1:15 brew ratio with a net result slightly below 12 oz. The will fill the glass caraf fully. I usually use the Fellow move mug (which is awesome by iteself) with this dripper so I rarely need to use the glass caraf. Even with the double walled glass, I do feel the glass gets a bit warm for my preferance when totally full. Overall, the dripper makes great coffee and has a solid build.

   The ONLY downside, are the filters. They are expensive and statistically, the filters are actually thinner than many other filters.

    The coffee from this Fellow Stagg [XF] Pour Over definitely better and a little stronger with the same water/coffee ratio and a better yield. I did a taste test using a simple manual drip coffee maker and the Fellow Stagg [XF]. For the test I scaled purified water and coffee to to a hundredth measurements. For the coffee I used SF Bay Coffee Colombian Supremo which I had already determined a very good coffee. I used the same measures for both brews and recommendations of the pour over instructions. Water 10.02 OZ Coffee 20.00 gm Coffee ground absorption yield Pour over 8.68 POZ Drip coffee maker 8.04 My rating Pour over 10 Drip 7 Both cups were very good but the Fellow Stagg [XF] Pour Over was a few steps stronger and absorbed less of the water yielding more coffee than the drip unit. The pour over does take a little more time, the proprietary filters do cost more but also yield more coffee. Taste over all I enjoyed the pour over best but results closer than I might have expected. In the end I will use the pour over and leave the drip maker for the rush days I occasionally have. I enjoyed the involvement making the brew with the pour over and the aroma in incredible while pouring.

    I love the Fellow pour over system – a great cup of coffee every time! However, the glass carafe is fragile. I am a very careful person and have handled the carafe gently during the two months I’ve been using it. This morning I was drinking my coffee and noticed some glass fragments on the table. As you can see in the photo, the outer layer of glass on the bottom came apart. I’m ordering a different brand of glass carafe that is hopefully more durable.

    The glass seal has gotten water in it and the water buildup continues to increase. This is a flaw in my opinion. Simple to use, sort of gimmicky though. Makes a decent cup of pour over coffee. If not for the condensation buildup in the seal I’d say it was fairly good and worth the money.

    Ich habe den Fellow Stagg x bestellt und auch erhalten. Es ist ein typisches Fellow-Produkt: viel Metall, sieht wertig aus, fühlt sich auch so an und ist (sehr) teuer. Nach guten Bewertungen von James, Lance und Aramse habe ich mich entschieden diesen “Flat-Bottom”-Brewer als Ergänzung zu meinen V60 Set zu kaufen. Und es ist in der Tat erstaunlich, wie sich das Ergebnis, der Kaffee, allein mit der Änderung des Brewers (Flat vs. Cone) ändert.

    Und ich gebe zu, ich wollte gerne diese “Tropfschale”, den Fellow Ratio Aid haben und den gibt es nicht einzeln zu kaufen. Mit dem Ratio Aid wiege ich jetzt alle meine Bohnen ab und er macht dabei eine wesentlich bessere Figur als die Tupperschale. 😉

    Würde ich nochmal kaufen als ersten Flat-Bottom-Brewer – hat man bereits verschiedene Pour-Over Flat-Bottom Brewer spricht vielleicht die Isolierung und das Material für dieses Produkt.

    Overall, I like the Stagg XF for its design and functionality. However, the quality control is quite subpar. The black paint coating on outside wall was also painted beyond the lip margins of the inside wall of brewer. I initially doubted reviews of other about QC, until I got my product.

    REVISED: when the extremely fragile carafe broke, I did a custom hack. I was tired of pouring but wanted to retain the technique’s subtle, clean flavors. Searched for an an SCA-certified brewer with pre-infusion, an excellent showerhead, accurate temperature and minimal footprint to fit inside my powered appliance cabinet… The Bonavita 1901 ($92 on coffeemakers.us.com) fit all of those requirements. Immediately stored away bonavita’s eight cup carafe and filter holder for the rare party use and instead, substituted the following: Fellow Stag’s XF dripper/filter holder ($59 from their website) + their special filters (on coffeemakers.us.com) Hario V80 carafe ($37 from coffeemakers.us.com) Both of these, dripper and carafe, are double walled, vacuum insulated stainless steel, not plastic, to maximize brewing heat retention, and, well, raise your barista street cred. The stagg xf fits within the Hario carafe so ridiculously well it’s as if they were engineered for each other (seriously!), and using the stagg’s steel funnel while brewing keeps the showerhead water perfectly away from filter edges. The combination leaves only about 1/4 inch gap between showerhead and dripper for, again, terrific heat retention. Once coffee is done — 3 min 25 seconds from when water starts dripping to when drops end, not including 24 seconds to heat water — I remove the carafe and it’s portable enough to float around the house with me. This hack produces roughly four 5oz cups of barista quality coffee. Totally recommend it if you don’t mind spending more to automate your pour over. I’d bet it’s better, less expensive and less bulky than a technivorm mocchamaster. ORIGINAL REVIEW (mostly about filters) Pros Really easy to use Really easy clean up and dishwasher safe No weighing necessary (use simple visual dots for measuring) Fully controllable drip time to your liking Option of doing slow pour over or filling the dripper all at once for an immersion style brew Very good heat retention (used to use aeropress and the coffee was always lukewarm) Cons The filters are a total pain in the butt to separate… No excuse for this really. They spent so much time engineering and perfecting the rest but made no effort to design filters that don’t stick together (allegedly improved in 2018 but still terrible). Who wants to be annoyed like this upon waking up! Why don’t they just add a paper thumb tab or a cutout to these things so you can more readily pull them apart? The whole system is pricey compared to other pour overs so my expectation is for it to be frustration free…not so with the filters To add insult to injury, the coffee filters are unique and pricey Lack of permanent metal filter.. Which if they had and I could stop using the sticky paper ones, I would have given it five stars.

    I purchased the Stagg [XF] dripper in September 2023 and have been brewing with it pretty regularly since then. This was my first flat bottom dripper. The more I use it, the more I like it. 5 stars for quality, functionality, ease of use and aesthetics. No first-world complaints from this reviewer. If you can pour hot water into an opening the size of a typical coffee mug, you will be able to brew ridiculously good coffee using the Stagg [XF]. Understandably, a smooth-walled carafe with no handle may be problematic for some hands. You can see from the image that I did not opt for the Fellow carafe as I already own several suitable vessels that fit the Stagg [XF]. With the Stagg [XF], there is no need to stir, swirl, tap, pour with magical technique and timing, pray, make religious gestures – none of those things you see on internet videos. You can do those things with the Stagg [XF] if you want to, but you don’t need to do those things. That is why I keep reaching for this brewing method more often. Just follow the instructions, use all the components appropriately and you will brew 500-750 ml of ridiculously good coffee quite fast. The only cons that I can think of would be the initial cost of the device and the ongoing cost of the Stagg filters. I have gone off-label a number of times and used the Stagg [XF] to brew 1000 ml, with less-predictable results. That may be another con for some. But if you are looking to try a flat-bottom pour-over that is easy to use and brews quickly, and you can tolerate the cost, the Stagg [XF] will brew ridiculously good coffee for you. Go for it.

    Bottom broke off first time using. Heard a pop after pouring hot water in and turned around to see the whole bottom broke off. This was the first time using product and directions were followed exactly. Note there were no sudden temp changes or reason for glass to break. So disappointing considering high cost of product.

    The tasting glass, which is double walled, is defective. When the glass is blown, there is a small nib at the bottom that is very delicate. Overtime, after setting the glass down on hard surfaces (like my kitchen counter top), this nib broke free allowing both air and water into the void between the side walls. Given the cost of Fellows’ products, quality controlled could be improved. This is true of their other products as well, like their EKG electric kettle which has flimsy control knob that sometimes just refuses to work.

    Worked fine for several months until one morning the outer bottom glass spontaneously exploded while in my hand. Fellow support seemed unsurprised and recommended warming the carafe with a hot towel before pouring coffee in it each time? Despite looking nice, this has some serious design flaws and we would definitely recommend avoiding.

    Overpriced and have not been able to achieve a single good pour over with this. Maybe its the narrow tall design of the filter component but the water seems to barrel through way too quickly no matter how much you try to limit the pour, and coffee comes out tasting burnt and watery every single time.
