   The size of this = 5 stars, but the freaking handle makes it a 4 star. This is nearly double the size of the French press that we had, and we also had friends staying over and we found ourselves brewing two pots just to get through breakfast as we are all coffee lovers. So, I found this one, which is one of the few that are this large on the interwebs. We love the quality of coffee that comes from a French press, and the ease of making it with an electric kettle. Now, the reason that I think this deserves a 4 instead of a 5 is the handle. Do you see that little, tiny, round knob on the handle that you press down to strain the grounds? That thing is SMALL AND DIGS INTO YOU HAND LIKE NO TOMORROW. It sucks. It literally hurts so bad every time I have to press coffee lol I have to call my man in who has hands like sandpaper and he doesn’t mind using it, but even then I can see him have a difficult time because the mesh inside will kind of wobble back and forth instead of going straight down, so there is a little bit of resistance with it. We use this thing quite a lot, but in all honesty I think there are some easy fixes that would make it FANTASTIC. And they need to fix those issues for their customers.

   Overall I like this but be aware that the lid is only partially metal. The copper part is metal. The black part is plastic. I like the metal inner filter and the glass carafe. I would need to pour hot coffee through the plastic part of the lid at the spout… I was hoping to avoid hot liquid touching any plastic. I must say the whole item is very pretty.

   I’ve had one of these previously and I don’t recall the caution list being written on the glass but it was my gf’s that she had for years so maybe it was rubbed off. I should have checked carefully, I just didn’t expect it. This lowers the aesthetic quality. I can’t imagine if every product had their cautions written on the product in a visible area. If this doesn’t bother you, it’s a decent product otherwise. Our old one lasted years until I broke it negligently. Mind you I had packed it to many camping trips and it always survived my brutish impatience. So it’s pretty resistant to stupidity (as you can tell by the printed caution instructions constantly reminding you that fire… hot…hurt hands..).

   I have the larger version of this French Press and have used it for many years without issue. Using a French Press is one part science, one part cooking and three parts magic/luck. Once you figure out your settings you are in coffee nirvana land. Since I rarely have the need for 33 ounces of the nectar of the gods I decided to get the three person version. Delivery was as promised and even with the delivery person dropping the box in the driveway the product was received unscathed. It was exactly as described. This is a small French Press. The directions specify not to fill beyond one inch from the top which is where the top part of the upper metal band is, a good visual reference. I measured out 12 ounces to see how much this version of French Press really holds. Twelve ounces comes right to the top of the metal band, about one inch from the top. Ahh, but there is a rub here as Archimedes discovered during his bath. If you put 3 scoops of coffee into the device you can’t possibly fit twelve ounces of water due to that whole displacement thing. Three scoops was too strong for me so I used two. I boiled a pot of water in the Ovente electric kettle. Letting it sit until it came off the boil I measured out 12 ounces and poured it into the Bodum. Mixing the grounds gently with a plastic spoon I then put the top on and let it sit for 4 minutes. Then I began the final step of the extraction process. Slowly and gently I pressed my palm into the firm roundness of the plunger. The slightest resistance noted, I pushed on, gently. Finally I reached the limit when I could push no more. I noted the creamy liquid forming on the top of the coffee. I rotated the lid and poured the hot, steaming beverage into the measuring cup. Ten ounces. I’m ok with that. No grounds or sediment was noted. I used Cape May Roasters coarse ground Lighthouse blend. Delicious. See photo. Regular coffee cup, Keurig and bag of coffee in picture for size reference. Note: I found that if you let it steep too long the coffee will begin to taste bitter, like re-heated, four hour on the burner coffee. Pay attention when you are steeping the grounds. Cleanup was simple. I used a plastic spoon to clean the grounds out and rinsed what was left into the disposal. Cleaning the grounds from the filter was simple. Definitely worth the purchase if you are looking for a one cup coffee maker.

   I had never used a French press until recently traveling in the Netherlands where they had one in our apartment. I always heard people rave about the coffee and the easy process. I loved it! They had a larger, heavier version made by Bodum. It made delicious coffee but my second cup was never really hot enough. We drink four cups in the morning so it makes sense to brew a pot, but in the afternoon I like one cup. Instead of saving a cup from the morning and microwaving it (I know, I know, that’s a sin!), I decided to get this smallest version of the Bodum French press. It works just like the larger version and makes delicious coffee. Note that they refer to a “cup” of coffee as 4 oz, where I drink a “mug” of 8 oz. It will brew a full measuring cup, which is 8 oz. You get a little less after you press it. Advantages are that your one cup is always hot, clean up is easy, and my husband who drinks decaf can brew a cup whenever he likes. I did find the glass to be a bit thinner than the larger version, and even though I used boiling water, my coffee was not extremely hot. The box was a bit messed up as if it was used, and it had an coffeemakers.us.com sticker saying this product “got a second life”. I thought I was buying a new product. But inside, the French press was in perfect condition, had the correct Bodum logo on the glass, and it came with its own measuring scoop, which is super convenient to make the best coffee without guessing. This would be great for travel too. I’m glad I got it.

   As an avid coffee drinker, I always try to find new ways to brew, drip and extract coffee. Over the years, I have become better at finding tastier beans, refining the process behind grinding and brewing. Not only is this french press have excellent quality glass, the build of the french press is of quality. The only cons that I have found is the fraying of the filter discs, which need to be replaced ever so often. It really depends on the frequency of use, but when the wire mesh starts to fray, it can be difficult to effectively clean and reuse the press. So don’t be cheap like me and try to hold out. Once the mesh starts to fray, replace it and don’t cut yourself!

   ADDENDUM: I contacted coffeemakers.us.com, and because I had never used this product, and it arrived broken, they were able to replace it. I am please. I purchased this item to replace a Bodum I’ve had for many years. This one arrived broken out of the box. I’m currently quarantined in NYC due to the Corona Virus and can’t run out to buy a new one. If there was every a time I need coffee, it is now. Please replace ASAP! I would like to add, that an online text resolved this issue. Because the carafe arrived broken, I was able to get a replacement quickly. However, I was told that there is nothing they can do regarding a similar product which broke after using only in the way recommended in the directions, and with only typical frequency, after two months. A 30 day window is inadequate time for returns. Any product without an expiration date should have at least a year for refunds. A product with breaks with in weeks of purchase is defective, and there should be no issues with replacing it.

    I love this French press. It sits on my counter. I don’t drink coffee, and my fiancé only occasionally drinks coffee at home, but we love this French press. I use it on weekends and whenever company comes over with the cream and sugar caddies. Everyone that’s tried the coffee from it has stated that it makes great coffee! I grind coffee for our cold brew carafe, but I use store ground for this. Not espresso, but regular not course grind, and the grounds don’t make it through the mesh into the coffee. I have the entire set and I use the tea pot daily for myself. I had these items on my wedding registry but couldn’t wait that long, so I purchased them! The mechanism works well and the glass is sturdy. I can see that the glass may break at some point during cleaning or pressing, but I’ll replace it with another one rather than something more durable. I love it that much!

    Unfortunately this product is not eligible for return. As you can see with the photos the product is defective. While washing it after receiving it, the coil sticks out a bit which traps the mesh under it and I almost couldn’t get the plunger out of the glass. It was really stuck. I have been a Bodum user for the last 40 years and this is very disappointing. The coil is very sturdy metal so I could not find it down. It’s defective

    I had a Bodum press previously for times when I needed a quick cup and didn’t want to do a whole pot of coffee in the coffee maker. One day when I cleaned the coffee maker I found so much gunk in it I knew I could never use a drip machine again. GROSS! So I made the break and went 100% press and never looked back. The coffee is better and a little extra cleanup day to day over the horrors that lay inside the guts of a drip machine made it no contest. But I needed a bigger press and this was one of only a couple from Bodum that fit the bill in being able to fill my carafe and get a cup out right now. Unfortunately after several months use I have discovered it has a major design flaw that has really bummed me out on this purchase. Namely the handle. The handle is designed to not need screws or rivets as it pops together and is held together by tension of the metal cage that holds the glass chamber. Over time it seems something has warped and it keep swinging loose at the bottom which can be a bit scary as it ONLY does it when its full of boiling hot water!! Had this problem surfaced earlier I would have returned it and looked at a different model or brand. It is sad as it really fits my needs and works in all other ways exactly as I want it and it makes great coffee but this makes it feel like kind of a chintzy item. It’s a real shame.

    Was exactly as described. Great packaging, shipped with protection in mind. Awesome quality. Was even better than my expectations! For anyone wondering about the size, I took a picture next to a standard bottle of wine and a tall coffee cup, to better provide a visual on the size. It does not fill up a tall coffee cup; but rather fills it to about 3/4 full. This is the size to get if you want just a small cup of coffee and no more! It ended up being smaller than I expected, but only because I did not pay enough attention to the description. I kept it anyway because it is so darn cute and there are days when I just want a small up of coffee and no more.

    After just a few uses, this shattered at the base when adding water, spurting scalding coffee and damaging our custom cabinetry. We had carefully handwashed and never bumped it. From other reviews this seems a common complaint. I thought Bodum was a premium brand but apparently no longer – there is no USA support phone number, they only respond by email (see below), and did not follow-up when I requested escalation to a supervisor. We do use a metal spoon to stir (as would many folks) – if it’s so fragile that this will damage the glass, it really ought to come with a suitable stirrer and warning label – not merely a short scoop. We also own their model with the SAN plastic beaker which has lasted for years – clearly Bodum’s thin glass has a design defect. DON’T TAKE THE RISK! When storing glass products, again, space should be chosen with care. Metal cutlery should never be used with glass. Unfortunately, if the glass has been knocked or damaged in some way and has a hairline fracture that is un-detectable to the human eye, the next time hot water is poured into the glass it can break or crack. This however is not a common occurrence. In most cases the glass lasts for many years without incurring any problems. We’re sorry we cannot provide further assistance on this matter.     The glass beaker slipped from my hand, fell less than an inch, and broke upon hitting the counter. I’ve notified Bodum customer support, however, previously we had to replace another (different model) French press due to it leaking, and it took months to get a response. I’m hoping they will respond faster this time. Given this issue and past customer support delays, I can’t say I recommend this product. The press itself works great otherwise, which is the only reason I’m not giving 1 star. I will update and change my review pending the customer support response.

    I bought this to replace one that broke after years of use. The newer model was dead on arrival. The glass had a large crack in it, so I ordered a replacement. The replacement arrived and appeared to be of good quality. The design flaw is that the metal frame does not securely hold the glass in place so that when you go to pour out the coffee or empty the grounds, the glass part just slides out and could easily fall and break if you are not vigilant. My previous Bodum used to hold the glass securely in place. That said, it makes a nice cup of coffee. The size is just right for my use — one mug of coffee in the morning. In February of 2024 the glass broke on my most recent purchase of this item, so I ordered another one. coffeemakers.us.com advertized one “like new” from the warehouse, so I ordered it. Unfortunately, the plastic coffee filter in the top lid was damaged (see photo) so I have to return it for a return. It looks like a manufacturing defect in molding the plastic filter correctly.

    I’ve been using a French press to make coffee for well over a decade and I’ll never go back, it makes a nice full bodied cup of coffee that’s less acidic than drip/pour over and let’s you taste more of the brand of your choice. Bodum simply makes the best versions of the press that maintains the warmth of the coffee due to the thickness of the glass they use and is nice and sturdy compared to other makes I’ve used. It also helps that it looks fantastic. Highly recommend!

    I am assuming the reader of this review already knows how to use a French Press for making coffee. If you need instructions just read the other 2 zillion posts for instructions. I am a bit disappointed in this product, not in how it makes coffee, which is just fine, as expected for a very simple device. But in the aesthetics of the unit that is below the standard I had expected from Bodum. Bodum apparently has a room full of attorneys that have the ear of management and convinced them to place instructions on how to use, and not use this product in both English and French. So thanks to Bodum I am reminded every morning how stupid people are in this country (and France too). For example, did you know that hot fluids must be handled with care? If not, buy this for that important fact. Also, children and hot fluids should be kept apart, so no more hot chocolate for my kids, thanks Bodum! Couriously, Bodum does not caution against using this product as a rocket launcher so I guess it must be okay for that; those attorneys must be considering that bit advice for future products. All would be forgiven if these warnings and useless instructions were not permanently fused to the glass, but short of sanding off the label, and damaging the glass, I am stuck with it. Ne pas utilize sue la cuisinere. The marketing gurus at Bodum know that this might be an issue for some people, so none of the pictures show this non-removeable warning, so in case this might be a issue for you, I am including it.

    If you think you’re getting copper, think again. This is a poorly made hollow plastic press. No st all like the previous one I ordered from this same company 5 years ago. The copper top is cheap, this plastic, the handle is hollow plastic, the he glass is not tempered. The first time I cleaned it and plunged the cheap plastic plunger into the unit it would not come back out, it lifted the cheap glass out of the cheap plastic ‘copper’ casing and the plastic plunger bent and nearly broke. The advertisement states it is stainless steel but it is not. Quote the claim by the seller “The frame and lid is made from durable stainless steel that’s undergone several chrome-plating processes to result in a durable, shiny surface capable of withstanding many years of use, Stainless steel plunger prevents ground beans escaping when the coffee is poured”

    Perfect for solo coffee making. I would just advise you to clean the inside very carefully. Don’t stuff a large cloth or your hand inside to clean the jar because the glass cracks easily. I have had to replace this one and one that was a larger size. Just use a brush and it will last.

    I purchased my Bodum 8 Cup Coffee press in January of 2003 (was only $ 19.99 back then…smile…)and it is still going strong. By far, the best cup of coffee that you can make at home sans an espresso machine. Actually…it rivals my very expensive Saeco espresso machine…by getting all of the oils from the coffee bean you are getting a full bodied cup of coffee, the way it was meant (yes…I know all about non-filtered coffee’s health concerns…) to be. Of course, for the best possible outcome, you would grind your fresh coffee beans right before making your cup of “Joe”… I like “Starbucks” “French and Italian Roast”; “Newhall Coffee Roasting Company” in Valencia, CA’s “Sumatra Mandheling – Grade 1″; and Polly’s Gourmet Coffee” in Belmont Shore, CA’s “Colombian Supremo”. Both Newhall Roasting Company and Polly’s roast their own beans with Polly’s roasting their coffee beans onsite. There is nothing like getting a warm bag of coffee beans right out of the roaster! If you aren’t local, no problem…Newhall and Polly’s both deliver. But back to my review. I believe the reason that my Coffee Press has served me well for so many years is because I take care of it. When I stir the coffee beans after filling with boiling water, I use a chop stick to stir the brew. I carefully hand wash and am very careful when hand drying. That’s it! BTW…I wrap a kitchen towel around the press which seems to keep the coffee warmer for a tad longer. I know…I’ll invent an insulated blanket and become rich!…smile…Enjoy! Update 12/02/2012: I was asked if I knew where my Coffee Press was manufactured. I didn’t know when asked, but recently found the box and the answer is “Portugal”. Again, I made my purchases in 2003, Product No: 1928 US.

    I have been using a French press for daily coffee for 3 years now. The coffee is so much better then drip coffee makers with deeper flavor which translates to not tasting watered down. My first french press was the 20oz Bodum which I was happy with but it only makes enough coffee for two cups and with it taking on average 10min (4min if you have hot water on demand) to make coffee two cups is not enough. We changed to the 1.5L Bodum and at the same time purchased the 1.5L Gint Carafe (B07RDNK5MM). These two work perfectly together. The Bodum makes plenty of coffee for 2-4 people and the Carafe keeps it perfect for hours. We have made coffee in the morning and it was still warm the next morning. Since the thermos is not adding heat to the coffee it doesn’t taste burnt even over night. If this is your first time purchasing a french press I would suggest buying a grinder as well. Fresh ground coffee is preferred to pre-ground. We had a black ad decker blade grinder first and have since upgraded to the Cuisinart CBM-18. Cons. – Thin Glass: The glass on this is not as thick as I would like. We recently had to order a second one due to the one we had cracking when it was bumped by a spoon in the sink. I would like to see something with a thickness similar to a beaker since I believe that would last forever.

    I love this french press. I’ve been using the Bodum Chambord for years & have 10 of them, in the various sizes (3, 4, and 8 cup). It’s good looking, quite sturdy, and replacement parts are easy to find. HOWEVER … I do have some complaints about the design. FIRST: The lid is made from 2 pieces (a chromed decorative cover over a plastic base), with a space inside for water to leak into while cleaning and create a mold problem. This does not sit well with me at all, and my initial solution was to remove the plastic retaining clip to separate the pieces every time I washed it … which became quite cumbersome b/c the clip isn’t easy to get out. I eventually replaced the plastic clip with my own system, which is much easier to remove … and then permanently removed the chrome cover and stored it away. (See Photo for details) SECOND: The cylindrical lock-nut holding the filter assembly together is difficult to take off for cleaning when my hands are wet. My solution was to replace it with a stainless steel wing nut. (see photo for details) THIRD (not necessarily a design issue): I keep my press & all of its pieces meticulously clean, and yet after only a few days of storage, a foul odor always develops inside the carafe and on the filter assembly, to the point that I must soak it in bleach water prior to use. If I don’t, I can actually taste that ‘smell’ in my coffee & it disgusts me. My solution to that problem was to store the lid/plunger assembly upside-down in the carafe, thus providing plenty of ventilation for the essential parts. (see photo for details) Now I’m totally pleased with the modified version of this press.
