   Update: I now think of this device as a “good enough” method for cold brew extraction. A lot will depend on your find size. If your grinder is inconsistent and produces fines (coffee “powder”), and you don’t filter these out (I use a Kruve, but, those are expensive) it is going to bind up as the coffee silt clogs the strainer after awhile. I’ve tried stirring when this happens. That helps. I’ve tried ladling the liquid into a Chemex with a filter. That helps. But if you run into a situation where the coffee and remaining liquid just sit there for 48 hours and atmospheric pressure isn’t enough to complete the extraction, you will get frustrated (as I have). A trick that I saw on an Alton Brown Good Eats program. Ice. You would keep the lever set to open and let ice melt through the coffee grinds, replenishing as needed. Original Comment: Having made the comment on the thin-ness of the carafe, I have heard that OXO is being very good about replacing it at no charge. There will, however, be an inconvenience factor. A good product. I was impressed by the quality of the cold brew extraction. I am a coffee aficionado as you will see from the photo of my current collection. Until I ran across one of these in a resale shop in mint condition for $4.00, I had been using the Sowden Soft Brew which I love. But a recent test of 15 different devices for cold brew, gave this one top rating and so I had to add it to my collection.

   I love this little gadget! I got it a couple of days ago and used it right away. I loaded it with 10 ounces of fresh coarsely ground french roast and five cups of filtered water. After waiting 15 hours, I had the best cold brew. It made four cups of coffee concentrate that I placed in the refrigerator and lasted me for three days. I like to have several iced coffees a day. It works very well and it is all hands free, pretty much.

This coffee cold filter is really straight forward, and I really believe the coffee tasted mellower. The jug has a sealed lid, pop it in the fridge and use it like espresso.

   Bit icky to clean, but it’s only once a week.
   It’s as sturdy as ever and I’ve used it for a full year. Also you can make iced coffee with the coffee concentrate, just add ice and milk!
   Bit bulky to store, but I keep it on the counter. No electricity, no need to buy filters and I use tap water without any problems. I’ve given away my filter machine and I’m not going back.

   It’s a little too large and a little dopey, it’s not “clever” or “elegant” about how it does anything, but I kind of have to give it five stars because it just WORKS and works well. I sort of wish it were more compact or sleeker, or prettier in some way, but at the end of the day, it’s the best cold brew maker I’ve ever used so I can’t deny it any stars. If you have a tiny kitchen and absolutely can’t take the space, you may want to beware (I’m nearly at that line) but that issue aside, it’s a very “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” solution to cold brew, at a very reasonable price.

   This contraption is pretty good, and makes good coffee. I’ve used this for about a year and will probably continue using it, but there are some issues with the filter cap at the bottom of the unit that have been a headache each time I use it. The cap design could be better. 1) The notches on the filter cap are smooth and not deep enough to grab onto effectively. Since it’s at the bottom, it’s usually wet and slippery as well. I’ve found that tightening the cap properly takes a fair bit of effort. Loosening can be quite difficult. 2) Not tightening the cap well, and maybe some other factor I’ve yet to recognize, leads to small leaks. The leaks somehow flow onto the countertop, even when the carafe is perfectly centered. This happens about 20% of the time, and used to be more like 50% when I wasn’t tightening the cap like I am now. I’m a bit worried that tightening it more to reduce leaks, will also crack the plastic eventually (maybe that’s why it doesn’t have a better grip?). Time will tell. Unrelated to the above, it would be nice if the carafe top didn’t have to be removed each time I pour coffee. Not a big deal, but peculiar.

   I’ve made cold brew for a decade. This is the best brew kit—it creates delicious concentrate. There’s no way around the requirement of steeping the coffee in the grounds. The glass, too fragile and breakable, strangely-sized carafe / pitcher is this product’s biggest limitation. It seems designed to prevent you from using a mason jar or another pitcher as an alternative. The beaker provided by Oxo is 6 inches tall, but almost all jars that hold 24 ounces or so are 7 inches tall. If this product were just an inch taller one could use a much better pitcher to collect and store the concentrate, like the Bormioli Rocco Hermetic Seal Glass Pitcher Update: I broke my carafe cleaning it—not dropping it—cleaning it… Note that Hario V60 Glass Coffee Server Pour Over Carafe Microwave Safe 1000mL fits perfectly and is sturdier and less expensive that the OXO replacement carafe.

   What is the most helpful for me, is the ease of this coffee brew system. The instructions were plain and clear, not over worded. coffeemakers.us.com’s review system is very helpful too. I read what to watch out for, like missing O-rings or silicon gaskets that prevent leaks while draining. Nothing was missing from the box although I had to search for the paper filters. They were found inside the drainage container all nicely packed into a little zip-loc baggie. I poured 40 ounces of water over 3.5 Cups of roughly ground coffee, let it bloom, stirred then let it sit overnight for a total of 18 hours. I drained out exactly 32 ounces the next morning. I used 2 ounces of brewed coffee to 6 ounces of water. The flavor was good and there was no bitterness. I liked it better than my Keurig coffee maker and my old drip pot Mr. Coffee. It runs neck and neck with my French press pot as that seems like a different flavor only hot. All in all, I’ll need to get use to this system but in the end, what I like most about my OXO cold brew system is the flavorful smooth, less acidic coffee.

   I like to use coarse grounds, I usually use 12 oz to 48 oz of water. After I fill the carafe, I might add another cup of water just to flush out all the concentrate. The carafe has worked well for me, I use the lid for measurement depending how strong the concentrate is. After I’m done, I put the grounds in my garden for mulch, the nutrients and it seems to repel insects.

    Some people are receiving products that work, I’m certain. But there’s a quality control issue and units are being shipped that leak. (I’m not the only one that has experienced this. If you buy this, save the packaging and test it out immediately to determine if you got a dud. The photograph provided shows how much coffee leaks after several hours. I dump the coffee back in to brewing container about 3 times per brew… it’s not the kind of hassle I signed on for. I’ve tested it multiple times and it has leaked every time. As far as I can tell, there’s nothing particularly special about this product. You let coffee soak in a plastic container and then drain out the coffee into the beaker. You aren’t paying for anything particularly convenient or innovative. So I wouldn’t get too excited just because this was reviewed well on a popular site…

    I have had this for about two months now, and I really enjoy my cold brew I’m making with it. However, since nearly the beginning I’ve had the recurring leaking problem that has been very frustrating. And judging by what I’ve read on here and other places, it is very common. Apparently it can happen if the gasket is too tight, or not tight enough. For some it never leaks, and then for many others like myself it leaks after a very short period of time. My first two brews had no issues. Since then, nearly every single brew has had some leaking – ranging from barely a couple drops, to a bit more of a constant slow drip. I feel like I’ve tried all the tips I’ve read online to try and stop it, and nothing has worked for me personally. I really do enjoy my coffee though. The brewer is easy to clean when it’s done. I wish the carafe had a handle – I always get slightly nervous taking it out of the fridge. And again, the leaking is a constant source of frustration for me. I really expected better for it’s price.

    We’re OXY fans, and this product does what it’s supposed to do, brew coffee without heat. But, when you strain the concentrate into the carafe through the metal filter and a supplied paper filter (for good reason) added, the filtering process will take way longer then the instruction book’s predicted twenty minutes to an hour. Skip adding the paper filter, and the filtering will go faster, but you’ll find residue in your concentrate that you may want to filter out by pouring the concentrate through a coffee filter into a container and then pour that back into the convenient carafe.

    First things first, i’m a coffee-holic. Over the last several years I have transitioned from traditional brew, to a keurig, to espresso, and have now been alternating between store-bought and home-made cold brew (originally made in bottles that I filtered through cheesecloth) Now that I have my oxo system though, I am never going back to any other coffee. To brew, all I do is mix the water and coffee like before and let it sit for a day. The next morning though, instead of a time intensive messy cheesecloth fiasco I flip the switch to start the filtration, get what I need for that morning and let the rest drip dry while i’m at work. The resulting coffee is very strong but rich with flavor and so smooth, with absolutely no grit. I use generic, bulk coffee (a $12 40 oz bag ground in store should last me weeks) This system makes cold brew coffee so easy , cheap and produces such a high quality product that I doubt I’ll ever be tempted to buy fancy coffee drinks from SBucks again.

    Just made my first batch. I’m loving this product. I was using the Takeya Cold Brew that I bought on here. This is way better and yields more. Also the Takeya results had a lot of sediment and required another filtering. However with the OXO, I’m not using the recommended amount of coffee. This is way to concentrated for my liking. I’m using half the amount of coffee and filling the rest up with water to make almost a double batch. I still dilute the results by half with water. I tried the first batch w/o a paper filter. I was really pleased with very little sediment. Only one complaint is the beaker. I really would have liked something with a handle. The beaker is awkward to handle with one hand. I’m still using my old coffee pot to hold the double batch and refrigerate.

    **UPDATE** I did my last test which was no paper filter, room temp steeping and very course ground coffee made for Cold Brew (Brizzy sold here on coffeemakers.us.com). Again, it did not drain after the first two cups (See video and pictures). This is just wasting money and coffee, which isn’t cheap. There is definitely a flaw in the design. The grounds just collect over the screen and prevent any water from getting out. I really wanted to like this cold brewer. The first batch I made was great and it worked fine. The second and third batches (same coffee) not so well. After 10 hours of trying to drain the coffee, I had to stand over the maker with a spoon and keep swirling the sludge so it would drip. Finally got about 2 cups worth. The 3rd time same thing. See pictures of the sludge that forms on the screen between it and the paper filter. Oxo was trying to blame me for making it improperly. It’s not brain surgery. I tried 2nd time steeping in fridge and 3rd time back on counter. Both times it also started leaking underneath. About 1/2 cup worth. I don’t understand the good reviews. The first batch did taste good. The search continues.

    I had been searching for a cold-brew coffee system for a while. I had one in the past, and it was messy and time-consuming. You also had to use these large coffee filters with it that did not drain well. My search is over, and if you are looking for a great CB system that is easy to use and makes excellent cold-brew coffee, look no further!! Of course, I read the 1-star reviews and the 5-star reviews. Many of the 1-star reviews complained about it leaking. I had only a few drops leak, and the carafe stayed under it the entire time, just in case it did leak and it caught the few drops. I wonder if they used fine ground coffee like is bought in the grocery store. I purchased whole bean coffee from Starbucks and had the barista ground it to the French Press coarseness. I bought some cold-brew coffee from the grocery store and used the empty bottles to store this CB. I do this to reduce the risk of breaking the glass carafe. 10 oz of coarse-ground coffee yielded a little more than half a bottle of cold brew you would buy at the grocery store. I used about 60 mL of cold brew for a 12 oz cup of coffee, which was about perfect. I am thrilled I bought this. I will save a TON on CB coffee from the grocery store or coffee shop. HIGHLY recommend. Follow the instructions and you will brew some great cold-brew coffee.

    The video shows how it wants to drain – it doesn’t then I stir with a spoon and it will begin to drain until I stop stirring. The image shows how much liquid drained into the beaker after about an hour and a half. I have yet to make one decent brew with this thing following the included directions. The big issue is with the design. As others stated it doesn’t drain. The screen at the bottom gets covered by the grinds. I clean it every time ,make sure there is nothing blocking and have used medium to coarse grinds and always get poor results. I wasted money on this product and have continued to waste money on the bags of coffee trying to get this thing to brew a batch that I don’t want to toss down the drain. Terrible design. \

    Wow! This is my first experience with cold brewing and I am pretty much thrilled! I love coffee, however, though I have my likes/dislikes and I know a lousy cup when I taste it – I am not a coffee snob. So if you are, ignore me! If you aren’t then read on! 🙂 My boyfriend and I had made a pot of coffee every day or so for years. Since we mostly prefer cold coffee – except on those rare nippy SW cold days – we had been brewing it and pouring it into a pitcher that we cooled and then chilled in the fridge. Our old Cuisinart coffeemaker has a mesh reusable filter and it finally came apart at the seams by the plastic at the bottom, and would blow coffee out into basket. When I went to look for a new filter (which I did find, btw) I was poking around looking at coffeemakers in general. It ended up leading me to Cold Brewing, which I started to read about in greater detail. When I discovered that cold brewed coffee was less acidic, I was sold. I love my coffee but both my boyfriend and I can get terribly acidy tummies from time to time. Myself, especially when I am stressed at work or something. So, I poked around coffeemakers.us.com looking at cold brew systems – reading reviews, checking prices, looking at what you had to buy to use them and keep them up each day. I ended up settling on this unit because of the reviews, the no-need for a paper filter (more on this later) and the price! I happened to get a unit from coffeemakers.us.com Warehouse Deals. I love them, because 9 times out of 10 I get something for a FANTASTIC deal and there is maybe a scratch on it or the box was torn up at most. I’ve returned a couple things that somehow got through coffeemakers.us.com QC, but that’s fine. It was an easy process. That said I got this guy for another ~25% off, and it was a great way to start – especially when compared to the cost of a new mechanical, traditional drip coffeemaker! The past few weeks I’ve been playing with it. And here is what I’ve got so far, especially for other cold brew newbies like me: Prep Work: – You will need to get a coffee grinder or have ready access to fresh ground COARSE ground coffee. Your regular drip ground coffee won’t drain well and will cling to too much of your concentrate when it’s done brewing. I got this one and it works great! I will be reviewing it soon: KitchenAid BCG111ES Blade Coffee Grinder – Espresso -You probably want to use filtered water if you don’t already. This is going to sit in water for 12-24 hours, rather than just burst through in a flash like your drip maker does. I use a common Brita. – Be prepared! Make this ahead of time! It does take 12-24 hours to brew. I have done 18 – 24 hours and that range works great for my tastes. I love the stronger flavor, personally. – Consider getting another “carafe”. I brew my coffee, then drain into the provided carafe because it fits the whole system properly, but the glass – however sturdy they claim it to be – feels too thin for my liking and we have too many klutzes in our house. I put mine in a thick glass pitcher for the fridge. I happen to think that for an OXO product this should have: a rubberized grippy bottom and a rubber grip at the neck (in OXO grippy black of course!). Why this isn’t the case is beyond me but maybe they can update in a future model. I would buy that separate if they made it. Time to make coffee! Here is how I’ve begun to do it: – Grind your coffee! Yum, this is fun especially if you’ve never done it before. It smells amazing! and the coffee made with it is pretty amazing, too! Make sure you grind it very coarsely. I have a method I use with the suggested Kitchenaid grinder I cited above and I will share that in that product’s review. – Remove the rain shield. – Put about 3.5 cups of coarse coffee (to taste – you may like more or less!) into the reservoir. If you just ground it, let it sit for a few minutes before you add water. – Double check the switch in the middle of the unit is UP. But to be safe I leave the carafe under the unit while brewing. – Replace the rain shield (or the sieve like lid, whatever you want to call it) – Add 5 cups (again, to taste) of filtered water, let it sit a moment, then stir the mixture thoroughly. – Wait 18-24 hours. – Replace carafe if you didn’t leave it under while brewing as I do, and flip the switch down. – Wait 10-30 minutes (may be more or less depending on your grind coarseness) for the brew to drain. Maybe gently wiggle the unit a little to assure it all drains out. – Remove reservoir – covering bottom so you don’t drip concentrate on the way to the sink – and do what you do with grounds. We save ours for the roses! 🙂 – I immediately rinse and wash everything – by hand – and set to dry. – Pour about 2oz of the concentrate in your favorite glass, add your cream and/or sugar to taste if desired, fill remaining part of glass with ice, water, milk (again, as desired), stir and enjoy the smoothest iced coffee you’ve ever had! Side thoughts and suggestions: If you see my attached picture (it’s not much to look at that isn’t already shown in the product page but) you can see I keep mine on a small dish towel. This is actually a pretty stiff towel, as it is backed in a plastic mesh for scrubbing dishes, so I use it to slide the unit under the cabinets while brewing or storing, and out when I am making or harvesting a batch of coffee. The lid for the carafe – I used it once. Since I don’t use the carafe in the fridge, I don’t need to lid the coffee in the carafe with the lid. I first used it once for measuring as suggested, but now I can easily eyeball how much concentrate is enough for me, as can my boyfriend. I will keep this, but it’s more of “just in case”, as I find the carafe a semi poor design for storing the concentrate, and I don’t need it for measurement purposes. Paper filters – it comes with them. I’ve used them a couple times, and I find it just makes the brew drain too slowly. I didn’t find that there was much sediment in the coffee, so I don’t find them useful or necessary. This is also subjective, and perhaps objective depending on your grounds, so you may prefer the extra filter for your brew, and find it worth purchasing in the future. Bottom line: I am in love with this thing! It’s a bit more of a process and a wait than my old drip machine, but the brewed concentrate is so much smoother on the tongue and easier on the tummy. It’s also made coffee making an enjoyable event. I’ve spent time hunting for different whole beans, smelling them, grinding them… I also suspect I will continue to play with types of coffee, how I grind it, ratios, etc. It is actually a bit FUN. And the coffee made in the process is fantastic. At this price, whether or not you get a discount for an coffeemakers.us.com Warehouse purchase, I think it’s a bargain. Oxo – Make the neck more indented and/or covered in your Oxo rubber-grippy stuff! And the bottom, too! I would never put this thing in my fridge. It would get smashed to bits. UPDATE 03/23/2018: Time flies – and I am due for an update. It’s pretty simple – It still works great. Looks almost new. Nothing broken or worn out. This was a great deal and barring dropping it I suspect it will be worry free for years to come. It also rocks cause it doesn’t use power which means there is no electrical component to go on any sort of “fritz”. It also makes it low impact and maybe even something you could take camping (surely without the awful carafe!) or use in a tiny home, etc. I am pleased with this item and very glad I got it some years ago.     This is a wonderful cold brew coffee maker. The majority of cold brew makers consist of something similar to a French press, with a filter in the middle. My last coffee maker was one of these. No matter how long I brewed it, it never really produced concentrated cold brew. It just never got really strong. I suspect it is because the coffee grounds get compacted in the filter and the water only passes through the filter once, therefore the grounds aren’t efficiently used. With this OXO cold brew maker, the coffee and water are are together in a large compartment, not separated. This allows the grounds to completely absorb the water the entire time. And the end result is concentrated cold brew that is VERY strong, and you can add however much water/milk/etc. to get the strength that you prefer . You get more servings of cold brew coffee from your beans than with the filter-style coffee makers. And the carafe lid has a cool little feature. The line that is about 1/3rd from the bottom of the lid is a 2 ounce measure, which is the most common amount of concentrate that is used in a serving of cold brew. This coffee maker is easy to clean (definitely easier than the filter types). I couldn’t be happier!

    For what it’s designed to do it really does work well. Easy to set up and use, easy to clean and most importantly no sediment in my concentrate. The downside as others have mentioned is with their quality control. After one day of use with the “beaker,” glass storage unit it cracked noticeably. I hadn’t washed it under hot water, all it did was sit in my fridge with the top on. When I took the top off the beaker cracked. The glass is way too thin imo and I’d imagine many others have had this problem. Again, the product works really well for what it’s supposed to do and I have Mason jars which I can use for storage so it’s not a huge issue, but it is an issue.

    I like this product, it’s very simple but gets the job done and produces a high yield of cold brew. Unfortunately it stopped working after 4 months of maybe biweekly use. The cold brew chamber has a stopper at the bottom that keeps the water and coffee in for brewing, which you can then release. Unfortunately that gasket leaks now, meaning you can’t brew coffee in it anymore.

    My wife and I love this. We make two brews per week. It is easy to clean, and with the special paper filters there are no grounds in the brew. The only problem is the carafe is too flimsy. I think it is borosilicate glass (think Pyrex) and it looks like a beaker, with measurement markings. But the glass is thin and finally broke after a year of being gentle to it. We happened to have a Bormioli Rocco 2-liter pitcher: Bormioli Rocco Hermetic Seal Glass Pitcher With Lid and Spout [68 Ounce] Great for Homemade Juice & Iced Tea or for Glass Milk Bottles This actually works great as a replacement. The glass is heavy and feels sturdy, like you could use it against an intruder (always a factor in my purchases). Also, the round interface on the bottom of the brewing apparatus sits perfectly on the aperture of the pitcher and is very stable (see photos). Finally, the pitcher is more than the capacity of the brewer, which eliminates a problem we used to have: overflow of the original carafe. The downsides are that you must lift the brewer onto the pitcher, and the brewer sits very slightly higher when on the pitcher. Neither are a problem for me but maybe they are for you. Also consider that any container large enough to contain the brew probably would not fit under the brewer anyway.

    Like a few other people have said now, I feel I have to add my voice to the concerns over the carafe. We’ve only used the machine three times now, and as I went to put the lid back on the glass carafe, using a gentle wiggling motion, not pushing straight down on it, it shattered under my hand. I have now three cuts of varying severity on my fingers, and I feel like I got off lucky. This is not a joke folks! If you want the machine to use to make coffee, fine. BUT PLEASE! REPLACE THE CARAFE WITH SOMETHING BETTER!!! We are now using a plastic container to catch the coffee, but I’m sure some actual QUALITY glass, like Pyrex, would also be fine. BE CAREFUL when you use that carafe!

    Great coffee maker. It could not have been easier to use. My neighbor and I did a head-to-head comparison of his favorite coffee. He was skeptical that Cold Brew would taste as good as his Espro French press. We used freshly ground beans. Both made good coffee. But there was a clear difference. The Cold Brew had less front end bite – less acidity. Exactly as Cold Brew is supposed to be. And I can keep this concentrate coffee in the fridge for 2 weeks, and it stays just as good. He said he would have to get the Oxo Cold Brew now. Two other details that I noted. 1. I tried to use a finer ground espresso grind from my freezer. The fine ground was much harder to make and clogged the filter up quickly. The instructions said this would happen. It did. Use coarse ground only. 2. This concentrate makes about a 1:4 ratio of coffee:water. I bought pre-made Cold Brew from the store. It says to mix 1:1.     Look no further than this OXO cold brew system. I got into cold brew after getting sick and tired of paying $5++ a cup at our local coffee shops. This system makes it effortless and easy to brew the best cold brew you will ever have and only takes a few minutes! I use a 10oz coffee/40 oz cold filtered water ratio and that usually gives me ~3.5 cups of concentrate that I then have as a 1:2 ratio for my daily afternoon pick me up. (By 1:2 I mean 4oz concentrate and 8oz of filtered water for a serving) Course ground coffee and medium roasts are the best when it comes to cold brew in my opinion and after a lot of trial and error. My favorite is gevalia Guatemala roast! This machine is so easy to set up and the components fit together securely despite being made of plastic. Pro tip, buy the extra filters if you are getting this machine, you will need them because this machine only comes with a few. The steps are simple- add a filter paper, screw on the bottom and make sure the brew switch is on lock. Add your 10oz coffee in the top of the system and then slowly pour your water through the rain drip feature on top. That’s it! Then wait 16-24 hours for the perfect brew. I personally find 23-24 hours produces the smoothest coffee.

    I’ve now been using the OXO BREW since Jan 2016. I really appreciate how easy it is to use & to clean. All the parts are easily hand washed & sturdy enough to last this long, not that I’m hard on them. I also like how everything fits into itself for storage. I’m not a coffee expert, so I will not profess that it makes a better cup of coffee, but I like that I brew the carafe & then store in the refrigerator. I have used it to add coffee to beer I’ve brewed (concentrated coffee is better for this) but mostly the cold brew is added to smoothies to give me a caffeine pick up. On occasion I want a cup of coffee, I can make a cup anytime & not have to brew a pot. I’ve enjoyed the OXO BREW & know I’ll continue to enjoy it. You’re better off with a toddy or find a good pre-made cold brew and save yourself the hassle of this

    Edit – April 2016: I’ve made a little workaround for the valve and filter thing — see below. — I’ve been making cold brew for a few years now, until recently with a very simple setup using a jug and transferring to a large french press to filter. Of course this got pretty tedious, so after checking reviews I decided on this dedicated apparatus a few months ago to make things easier. And wow, has it ever. I grind the coffee, dump it in and add water, and leave. Later, I flip a lever, and not much later after that, I have my cold brew. Nice! Plus, Oxo really scored with the stainless filter in my opinion — it does a better job and passes a lot less sediment than the similar filter in my press, and it’s easy to see that it’s truly clean unlike a pad of fuzzy material. I don’t get out quite as much liquid compared to my old setup, as should be expected since I can’t squeeze on the grounds like I can with the press, but I’ve found it to be fairly efficient — I eventually get out most of the liquid I put in, if I let it drip for a while. However, I’ve encountered a nontrivial flaw in the design — not a fatal flaw to be honest, but one that’s amazing in how ironic it is given its name brand and their reputation. Below the filter there’s a hockey-puck shaped assembly which contains the simple valve that releases the coffee, and this assembly has to be screwed into the bottom of the brewing vessel. It has a silicone ring around its outer circumference to form a seal so the whole assembly doesn’t leak while it’s sitting. When you tighten it in place, the filter above it is also clamped into position. Unfortunately, the filter itself doesn’t have any sort of sealing gaskets, just a plastic frame around the stainless mesh. So, to get a good seal (preventing bypass of unfiltered solution), you have to screw in the valve assembly pretty hard. And the valve can only be gripped with your fingertips since it’s surrounded by the plastic flange that centers the vessel in the lower support. The motion would be a bit awkward even if you didn’t need to apply much force. Now I’m not especially strong but I’m a 40-year-old guy and I work with my hands for a living, and even so I find it difficult and uncomfortable to screw this valve assembly in place enough to secure the filter (such that it doesn’t spin or rattle loosely in its place). And unscrewing it later is a hassle I anticipate with a measure of frustration, usually reaching for something (towel, rubber pad, etc) to improve my grip. Which is, when you think about it, a really weird problem to have with an Oxo product. Other nitpicks apply — they really should have provided a solid cover to reduce air exposure and evaporation during brewing (I use plastic wrap, or a dish), and the carafe does seem rather slight though I haven’t had mine break yet like others here. Good on them for making it out of decent borosilicate glass, but it could probably stand to be a bit more sturdy. I’ve stopped putting the stopper in mine, and instead I immediately transfer to bottles which store better in the fridge anyway. All complaints aside I’m glad I bought this, and the cold brew I make with it has become a daily staple. I think Oxo owes it to themselves and their customers to redesign the valve assembly on the bottom though — the little finger scallops aren’t enough for a fitting that requires that kind of torque to seal and unseal. Give us some handles or something, or move the valve gasket interface to a smaller diameter, or design the filter with its own gaskets. For the product as-is though, on a lark I decided I’d make a little workaround. What I came up with is admittedly a bit whimsical, but it actually works surprisingly well. I drew up a little wrench-like tool that fits the finger scallops on the valve and then printed it out in ABS plastic, and I’ve attached pictures of it to this review. If you’d like to have your own, I put the STL and STEP exports on Thingiverse (can’t link directly; search for “coldbrew tool”) so you can download them and 3D-print or mill your own. There’s also a Fusion360 export file there in case you want to play with the design.
