   I ordered this portable expresso maker for times when we travel and don’t want to stop to get a pick-me-up. It’s relatively simple to use. It brews coffee as well as expresso. I do not have the little pods that are compatible with this expresso maker, but I can’t help but think that they would provide a more flavorful expresso. I will have to buy some and try it out. I used a brand name, Expresso Bean, which was already ground. It took some time before the water heated enough to make the expresso. The water I used was room temperature. Once the expresso started brewing, it went pretty fast. It brews a small amount, maybe 1/4 or 1/3 cup. It wasn’t bad, but neither was it memorable. I prefer cappuccino to expresso; I may be biased. I want to try the pods to see if they’re any better. Perhaps with a different brand and grind of coffee, or the pods would provide a tastier expresso. I think it’s an excellent option for travel or camping if you aren’t finicky about your expresso.

   The Mesto self-heating single-cup three-in-one coffee maker is ideal for light coffee drinkers or outdoor activities. Out of the box, the three-in-one Espresso maker comes with a coffee scoop, a USB cable, the unit, and an instruction booklet. The bottom cap can serve as a coffee cup. The electric coffee machine holds a maximum of 2 oz. of water and the cup has a capacity of 4oz. The machine works exactly as it was billed; however, it can only produce a shot of coffee or espresso. When operating the machine, water is added to the top compartment, and either coffee grounds or small or large capsules can be used. I used grounds, and when the water was heated a pulsating orange light slowly became brighter, until the machine beeped four times, and the control panel LED light changed to green and the coffee began to brew. The Mesto self-heating single-cup three-in-one coffee maker is attractive, works as expected, and would be great for camping or any outdoor activities. The drawback is the maximum water lever which is only a shot of coffee or espresso and would have to be repeated four separate times to brew a single cup of coffee, although a 2oz. shot of espresso would be a sufficient wakeup. The unit is ideal for outdoor activities, camping, hiking, van life or RV travel, and overnight trips where coffee runs would be impossible.

   Quick Review: The overall build quality and engineering of this portable Espresso maker is satisfactory, and seems -mostly- well thought through. If your ONLY going to be using this for pre-ground drip coffee or Nespresso “Original” pods, and dont mind the resulting coffee being a touch sub-par or a little cooler after brewing, you can probably disregard the negative aspects of my review. I would rate it at least 3, if not 4 stars under those conditions, particularly after factoring in the current 40% off coupon. For my use-case though, I have to drop 3 stars because the refillable pod was damaged after a single use. The metal filter crumpled against the wall where water flows out, from the pressure it generates with a Nespresso-comparable grind settings (I use the same grind in my refillable Nespresso pods). The refillable pod was likely only designed for preground drip coffee, despite the machine being able to handle finer grinds in it’s other adapters. As I intended to use it with fresh ground coffee most of the time, my ability to use it is now severely limited unless I go through the hassle of a return. If the metal plate was a little thicker and the holes in the filter adjusted better, the refillable adapter could have easily handled some finer espresso grinds. … More details, good and bad: *The instructions are generally minimal and I wish they went into more detail on a few things. Details like recommended grind size for the refillable pod in particular would have been nice. ***Despite my observation below, your not *supposed* to use refillable Nespresso pods in the Nespresso pod adapter. The instructions dont tell you this, it permanently punctured my refillable pods no less than three times before I figured this out. On the bright side, there is no question about the needle’s durability if it survived punching the steel pod three times. **Its not that the machine cant handle the “Nespresso” fine grind settings. I used the same settings in my refillable Nespresso pod, the kind you reseal with a foil sticker. The machine had no issue makin g coffee using this pod, other than permanent cosmetic damage to the refillable pod. *Coffee is generally a little cooler after brewing than straight from my Nespresso machine, though Id say its generally at a good drinking tempurature. Its still hot enough to mix with powdered creamer like Coffeemate, if you prefer. *The espresso flavor seems a little lacking compared to brewing from my full sized Nespresso machine. Its not bad, it just strikes me as an “OK quality for camping or getting caffeine without leaving my desk” situation. *Build quality is a little lacking in a couple spots, but generally feels pretty solid. Id say 85% of it feels sturdy and made with good thick plastic while 15% of the parts seem questionable. *Battery life is very short when using the heater, about 3-4 brews before running out. It takes a long time to recharge after even a single shot. Its still great for getting a shot of coffee for 1 or 2 people once a day. However, if you have access to an electric kettle or campfire to preheat the water, it can make many more shots before recharging. *The charging indicator is very bright and easy to see in a well lit room. Its easy to glance over to check on it. It also pulses orange while heating water so you can keep an eye on it while brewing. The USB C charging port means you dont have to keep track of a specific charging cable. *I wish the charging port had a splash resistant rubber cover, the body is not waterproof and this would help protect it from an accidental spill while filling it. *It appears to make authentic crema using Nespresso pods, not faux crema like some machines do “for presentation”. I suspect the refillable adapter makes faux crema though, it has a design that reminds me of a pressurized portafilter. *I cant find anything definitive in the instructions or advertising on what the “Large” coffee pods actually are. Ive not been able to find anything concrete on search engines either. Id like to try these larger pods, or even see if they have a refillable pod in this size that works without being damaged. *The refillable pod is fairly well designed outside of the filter warping. It has a cap that splits the water flow from the needle into 4 directions to better saturate the grinds. Coffee likes to get stuck on the rubber seal though, and can be a pain to clean off for a proper seal. *It has a working thermometer inside the heating chamber and can use it to save battery power, heating mode does NOT simply run on a timer. For example, if you have access to a hot water dispenser but know it’s not hot enough to brew with, heating mode will detect this. It took less than 3 minutes to heat 150 degree water to 186 and brew with it, compared to 5 minutes with cold water from my fridge. *The lid is NOT waterproof. Its NOT a good idea to fill it with water and put it in a travel bag, it WILL leak. This is because the lid has a pressure relief system so the expanding steam doesnt make the kettle burst. Instead, keep a flask or something on hand to fill it only when your ready to use it. *It can be used without the lid on, though the lid helps protect you from spills if something knocks it over while heating. The lid is fairly secure once attached, though I do worry about the tiny locking notches breaking, I wish they were a bit thicker. *The flat water heating chamber tends to trap a ml or two of water, it helps to open the lid when you hear the pump run dry and tilt the remaining water into the pump inlet. You can then tap the power button once to shut the pump off, though it will automatically stop after a minute. *I wish it had a separate stand or ring so you could brew into cups other than the one it comes with. The included cup is not exactly fragile, though it strikes me as something that might crack if you drop it onto concrete.

   The first time I tried it I accidentally tried to load my NS capsule in upside down. The directions are clear and fairly easy to follow, you just have to read them all the way through before using, unlike what I did! It comes with additional attachments so you can use multiple kinds of espresso (including loose grounds). You can also use either cold or hot water, depending on what you have on hand to start working with. It makes a decent espresso shot for a small gravity based machine on the go, but I wouldn’t plan to use this everyday. No crema is formed and that is the only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 – that would require more pounds of pressure than a small battery powered unit like this could produce, but the espresso is pretty good tasting just the same. For those of you expecting to use this for regular American coffee, know that it only holds 30-60ML of water at a time (enough for one single shot or a double shot) and it takes 5 minutes to heat that little water up before brewing it… so you’ll be waiting a very long time for enough hot water to fill an Americano. It really is an espresso brewer only for something like camping. Now, if you were just taking it on vacation to a hotel so that you didn’t have to drink hotel room coffee, you could absolutely use the hotel’s hot water and add it directly to the espresso shot.

   I drink cold lattes almost exclusively, and even though I have been using a manual device similar to a French press to make my espresso for many years, I decided to try this little machine using capsules again (I had an espresso machine a number of years ago). Wow! I made the best lattes ever! The coffee certainly had very much to do with that, but this little machine extracted it perfectly. I also tried it using my own coffee. While it wasn’t as strong as using the capsules (I think I have to practice a bit using my own coffee), it still worked well and gave me good espresso, plus it saves on money if you don’t want to buy the capsules. If you want the machine to heat the water, battery life is very limited. So I started heating the water first, and the battery is still going strong after several uses of two capsules each time. I enjoy making my lattes this way again, so I decided to invest in an espresso machine for everyday use, keeping this portable, battery-operated machine for travel. I have yet to use it when traveling, but I’m looking forward to having my delicious lattes when I am away from home. A big thumbs up for this little device!
