   This machine is amazing, and the price point is excellent. I loved everything about it and wanted to keep it. However, the coffee does not come out hot and there is no way to adjust it so I am returning it.

   Since this is a pricey item (at least to me), this warrants a thorough review. While I love espressos, lattes, and cappuccinos from the famous coffee house chain, my experience making them at home is limited. My spouse bought me an espresso machine about 20 years ago which I ended up giving away because it just didn’t work out – it was difficult to use, the instructions were vague, it was hard to assemble and worst of all, hard to clean. That was a long time ago so I thought I’d try again with a new model. A lot has changed over the years! For context, a quick google search of home espresso machines puts the features and pricing all over the map, so you must decide for yourself which features are worth paying for and I’ll try to cover all the high points of this model. Sur La Table is a trusted brand in my household; I have purchased their kitchen items and never been disappointed with their quality or functionality so I had high hopes that I would like this machine. And I do. This espresso maker has many nice bells and whistles for the money- here’s a run-down of the noteworthy features with some pics and a couple videos: • Great instruction manual – this is a must-have for a machine like this. Very thorough instructions (see pics) on assembling, using, and cleaning. • Everything you need is included – a small and large filter, the measuring scoop/tamper with a storage area in the back of the machine (pic included) so you don’t lose the parts. All you need to supply is the coffee – Excellent! • Easy to put together – everything’s labeled well in the manual and makes sense. 😊 • Easy to disassemble and clean – very important to me. No one wants to spend more time cleaning an appliance than using it. ☹ • Large water and milk frother reservoir. You can remove the water reservoir or just open the lid and add water – nice. That’s better than my newer model pod coffee maker that doesn’t have a hinged lid reservoir. • It has a cup warming area – I haven’t used it yet because I keep forgetting but it’s a nice touch! • Digital touchscreen is upscale and easy to read. • The amount of brewed espresso is adjustable – there’s easy instructions to follow to adjust it to your preferred amount and it’s easy to restore factory defaults. • The milk frother is outstanding – much better than the little hand-held ones. It created a wonderful, long-lasting foam from 2% milk. Some observations: • Some side notes on the milk frother: It states you can store the unit’s milk reservoir immediately after use in the fridge for next time. But it also states the cleaning function of the milk frothing system must be used at least once after each use to prevent blockage. Not sure how you can store the milk and still clean the frothing system but I just flush it out and clean it when finished to avoid any bacterial growth. When you make a latte or cappuccino, you don’t get to select (at least I couldn’t find the option but I may be missing something) to add the milk at the end of the brewing cycle, it adds it first. There’s a note on manually controlling the amount of frothed milk – add what you think you will use for your cappuccino or latte (at least to the minimum line) but you can press the small Latte button for more than three seconds to add frothed milk and then press the button again once you have the desired amount. I’ll have to use this a few more times to see if that works to add the steamed milk/froth after using the espresso option. I’m also not sure about the froth control knob – the instructions direct you to turn it to the max position so I haven’t adjusted it to see what it would do when not in the max position. • I didn’t see an option to adjust the water temp. While the brew is hot, I prefer to be able to set the temp as I like my coffee extra hot but it’s not a deal breaker here but worth noting. I’m no barista (as you can probably tell from these videos 😊) but this machine makes it really easy to make impressive espresso beverages at home, even if you don’t use it daily. For me, this is the perfect alternative when I don’t want to leave the house on a cold, snowy morning to get my espresso fix or when I have company. This will get a lot of use around the holidays. Well done, Sur La Table!

   This really takes some patience if you’re new. I am new. I was getting worried because the first several times I tried to use it I kept receiving the no water error. About the time I was going to give up on it, it started working. I guess it just needed to prime? Next, it was off to figuring out why it wouldn’t let me choose anything with the froth. Turns out it has a lock that needs to be straight up in the lock position to work. Now that I have figured it out, it works great. I can make my latte anytime I want! It is actually very convenient.

   I’m not a heavy coffee drinker anymore. I enjoy a cup once or twice a week. I didn’t want to buy an expensive machine after my negreaos machine stopped working. This machine is a great deal for me. I get the frothed and the espresso and much more. I will wait a year to give a a five star if it merits.
   Update:
   I’m buying another espresso machine because I don’t like cold coffee and this machine doesn’t heat up the water enough to make a hot cup of coffee. Don’t waste your money.

   This Sur La Table kitchen essentials espresso machine is just alright. It’s very easy to set up and operate. The machine is mostly made of plastic and some of the parts feel a little cheap. The milk frother can’t be used independently and it doesn’t heat up well which means the cappuccino and latte don’t come out hot so they need reheating. The espresso shots brew fast and the buttons can be customized to measure out the exact amount you want which is pretty cool. Overall this espresso machine works good, it’s a good value and a good starter machine but it’s lacking in some areas.

   There is one thing I don’t like about visiting my parents and it’s that they drink fake coffee…..you know the kind ; ) I have a very expensive espresso machine but it’s built like a tank so I can’t take it anywhere. I saw this and decided to get it because of the milk feature (the reservoir) but you can put water in there too. It was very well packaged so I didn’t have any damage and it’s super light so it would be easy for me to take to my parents whenever I visited them. Oh my gosh, this machine was a life saver for me! Now don’t get me wrong it doesn’t make “out of this world” espresso but it definitely does make a good one. You can brew multiple types of espresso just by pressing on the display screen. I did take a star off because I couldn’t figure out how to remove the reservoir and was scared of snapping something off. Finally I just gave up and I yanked the tank straight up in an angle and out it came (see pic). The other thing I didn’t like was that the filter that goes into the porta filter kept popping out and I couldn’t figure it out until I saw a dot on the inside of filter. You put the side with the dot into the square opening of the porta filter and you twist….now it’s locked into place (see pic). I am very happy with this machine and it’s a game changer at my parents house.

    The Sur La Table espresso maker appeared to be an excellent buy. I am familiar with the Seattle store and have shopped there many times. Most of the products are high end and of excellent quality. The package arrived in good shape. The retail box was packed inside another cardboard box from the factory in China. I unpacked the machine which appeared to be in perfect, unused condition. I was impressed by the machines features and by the detailed instructions. I read the instructions carefully and also read all the reviews on coffeemakers.us.com. I then prepared to test the machine’s features which are controlled by a touchpad. After making various shots of espresso, I concluded that the shots were watery with little or no crema. There was something wrong with the extraction process. I used various grinds of espresso with similar results. I even tried ESE pods in both the single and double filters. Nothing but water landed in my cup. The milk frother function seemed to work well, but the resulting drinks were undrinkable because of the poor espresso extraction. Perhaps my machine was a lemon and something was defective. I reluctantly returned the machine to the seller for a refund.
