   Looked for a coffee maker that was close to pour over coffee. The Mochamaster is one of the machines out there that seem to do the job. Overall the quality of coffee seems superior over drip machines. I’ve been using this for around 3 weeks now making coffee daily. I’ve actually went from 7 scoops to 6 and have changed the grind just a touch. I have tried preground and works fine too. I bought a permanent filter and used that and tried the paper filter also. My personal preference is the paper honestly but that is my opinion. I rated this 4 star because the water comes from the tank side of the machine. When you start to brew, the grounds start to get wet of course but only on the one side. I turn the filter till all the grounds get wet. Now I have to admit I haven’t just let it go and see what happens. I will have to try this hut knowing pour over and blooming the coffee it’s seems to need to be done early and not over time. The carafe does keep the coffee hot for quite a while. I don’t preheat it and still does a good job. Overall a great machine.

   Seems like a poorly designed filter basket. The way the filter basket meets the drip hole, filters can block the hole or small amounts of coffee can block the hole, causing the entire filter basket to overflow. This happens unexpectedly even when using the proper grind size and weight, when folding the filter away from the drip hole, and when making sure coffee is in the filter before brewing.

   I expected more from a company as well regarded as Technivorm, now I’m on the hunt for a coffee pot that doesn’t spill every 5th time I use it, wasting my coffee beans.

   After a year of use, I can accurately provide a review of this expensive coffee maker. Bottom line. It makes good coffee. I can only assume the guts of the machine are of the highest quality since I can’t see them however, the pieces on the outside of the machine are not good. The footplate on the thermal carafe model is useless. It won’t stay on or in place. The rubberized feet on the bottom of the machine won’t stay on. The water reservoir is made of hard plastic that seems fragile. And it is. The water outlet arm rests on top of it and the reservoir has cracked almost to the bottom. Another crack is beginning about an inch away, on the other side of the arm. The lid on the filter basket is hard plastic and could easily crack as is the lid on the water reservoir. There are other issues with the basket and it is irritating that there isn’t an automatic shutoff. I was disappointed when I first took the machine out of the box. For the money, the parts I just mentioned were cheap but I wanted to give it a fair try. The cracks in the reservoir were the last straw. Water is now leaking out and it isn’t a year old! At almost $400 this unacceptable. Would I buy this machine again? No. Can I recommend it? No. But does it make good coffee? Absolutely.

   We’ve had ours since Jan 2023 (so over 2 years as of this review). I finally decided to spread the love on here as I’m sipping my perfect coffee as usual this morning. We had gotten into pour over but struggled with keeping it warm if we wanted more than one cup (or if one person got up and made it first) It was also too time consuming on days when we were in a rush to get out the door. I’d been reading about the Moccamaster for a while & we finally decided to invest in one. Zero regrets. You really can’t beat the flavor of coffee brewed this way. We chose the stainless steel carafe over the glass one because you can seal the top and it stays warm for hours without any burnt taste from sitting on a heating element. One of us will get up, make coffee, seal the top. The other person will get up an hour later & still have fresh tasting, hot, pour over coffee. Some ppl have complained about the plastic elements seeming cheap. They are thinner, not because they’re poorly made but because they’re not made using BPA plastic. That’s a very, very good thing and I hope they never change it. I clean it on schedule using the powdered products they recommend (after about 100 brews it’s time to run a cleaning cycle) We plan to have this coffee maker well into our old age so we take care of it. We’ve even taken it in our camper so we don’t have to miss our perfect coffee when we’re on hiking/camping trips, and when we can’t bring it on other trips, we miss our perfect morning coffee. It’s hard to beat.

   Expensive product with apparently low quality parts….Strong burnt electrical smell just after a few months of use. After taking apart the coffee maker I noted the heating element is burnt completely. Manufacturer won’t pay for shipping the item back, & UPS quoted us over $60 to ship item back to the manufacturer to have them repair it. One would think the price would equal quality but it definitely does not in this instance. I would caution anyone looking to purchase this product.

   I should start by saying that I love the coffee this machine produces and, until recently, had not regrets buying from this company. I use the machine daily and have zero issues on the quality it produces. I paid extra for the Moccamaster that has a metal insulated flask with a screw top for transit (perfect for road trips etc.). Additionally, I didn’t want a hot plate where the quality of coffee reduces if you don’y consume it within a short period of time. My disappointment lies in the plastic top of the flask as this has a design flaw (as precisely the same issue has arisen twice since my purchase of the coffee brewer). The plastic top that keep the coffee warm and transportable is constructed from two moulded pieces of plastic that are ‘joined’ together. After a few months of use, the tope separates, leaving the bottom part of the top (the plug) tight within the flask and extremely difficult to remove. On the first occasion that this occurred, we were on a road trip to CO and 1 hour into the 12+ hour journey, I had no way of opening the carafe so it remained in the car until our return. Customer service apologized and sent a replacement which I appreciated and allowed me to continue using my flask. A few months later, the same happened again – the images show the two-part construction that has failed. The fact that this is the same failure point is a defect and could easily be remedied by a single piece top. When I raised this again with Customer Service, I was informed this was not covered by the warranty and I would need either to purchase another (defectively designed) plastic top OR, if the top will not come out of the flask, to purchase another flask (c. $100)…Let’s think about this for a moment, you purchase a coffee maker for in excess of $300 for the purposes of making coffee yet – BECAUSE OF THEIR DEFECTIVE TOP – you can no longer use the coffee machine for the purpose you bought it for. And if you DO buy the replacement part – so you can use your coffee machine – you can expect to repeat the process when again it fails. The plastic part is $15 (not a lot of money) unless you need to replace the flat when the price is c$100. The response from customer service over this will stop me recommending others to purchase this machine (and 5 of my friends have so far bought based on my recommendation). And, here’s an idea…perhaps redesign an obvious defect so that the entirety of the product is at an excellent quality. In short, an excellent coffee brewing capability marred by poor customer service and an extremely poorly designed part that can hinder/prevent you using ithe machine. The response from Moccamaster customer service is beyond disappointing and not representative of an otherwise well thought out product.

   My husband and I did a lot of research and reading of reviews before we picked our newest coffee machine. We had a Capresso that lasted eight years before several parts gave out. We had our eye on a Technivorm but weren’t sure if we wanted to drop $300 on a coffee maker. In the end, we went with this one and haven’t looked back. We love this machine! We have wooden cabinets with a lip on them, giving us only 16″ of height, and initially were concerned about the Technivorm fitting, but because of the design, it sits perfectly on the counter in front of the cabinet without ever having to move it. With our old machine, we were constantly shifting it back and forth between filling it with water and coffee, brewing, and cleaning. The Technivorm remains stationary and we use a water pitcher to fill it. Also, for anyone wondering if the colored base of the machine is plastic or metal, it’s metal. I assumed it would be plastic and was really happy to see that it’s not. It’s nice and sturdy. We got the slate grey, which goes well with our kitchen colors, but I’m sure it’s handsome in any color. Firstly, it’s really easy to set up and use. Just read the little booklet and you can’t go wrong. For the first few brews, we used the #4 paper filters that came in the box, but we ultimately switched to a stainless/gold filter. Despite the mild warning in the instructions that you won’t get as good a cup of coffee using a gold filter, we’re not noticing a difference in flavor. Secondly, all the parts of the coffee maker are easy to clean. We also wash the filter each time with hot water and Dawn to try and remove any leftover oil from the coffee grounds. We did have to do some experimentation with how much coffee we were grinding to get our preferred strength. If you go with what Technivorm recommends, the coffee is *REALLY* strong (not to mention you’re grinding more for each pot, and you’ll go through your bags of beans a lot faster). If you want more espresso-flavored, European-style coffee, then put 7 scoops or 68g of freshly ground coffee beans in. You’ll have no trouble staying awake. For our taste preference, we do two 20-second grinds in our burr grinder, which yields between 5-6 level scoops, closer to 50g. Between that and the 40oz of water which Technivorm says is “10 cups” (or four 10-oz cups), the coffee is still very robust but without being bitter, and we can taste all the notes from our coffee beans. The coffee comes out piping hot and smells and tastes amazing every time. I’ve had my two cups of coffee for the day and writing this makes me want to brew another pot. Extremely happy with our purchase — worth every penny!

    I spent a lot of time, really many months, reviewing video and text reviews of this coffee maker before I finally plunked down the $300 to buy it. I was a bit skeptical at first, knowing that there were several systems out there that did just about the same thing and were even designed somewhat in the same fashion. Some of them even had a similar appearance and form, but did not garner the same percentage of positive reviews that this unit did. I must admit that I did not try any of the other systems before making this purchase but had previously owned a simple Braun drip coffee maker that had lasted 15 years and had (I thought) made a really good cup of coffee. Buying this unit and having coffee from it has completely changed my perspective on what a real coffee maker is and how good the same coffee can taste from a different and very well-made system. First off, the quality of the parts used on this machine are second to none. It is very well put together and the plastic parts seem very high-grade. It is definitely a very simple machine, even having a manual drip basket shut off switch when other cheaper models have a valve that shuts off the drip basket when the carafe is pulled. The only drawback with this is that if you forget to re-open the valve while the machine is still brewing, the basket may overflow. Also, the plastic platform that the basket sits upon seems a bit flimsy but is actually quite sturdy. And most importantly, it is made to be easily cleaned with full access to all components. The metal shower bar at the top Is easily removed and the water reservoir has a very wide opening. As you can see from one of the pictures I’ve posted, the temperature of the water coming into the coffee is easily above 205° which produces a “blooming“ of the coffee grounds and really allows full extraction of all the wonderful flavors and oils that are in the coffee. This is truly a unique coffee experience for me, as I’ve been a coffee snob For over 30 years. Please, I implore you to watch review videos of machine comparisons and coffee taste testing between systems. In each and every one, the moccamaster technivorm always wins In the taste category. So if you are serious about getting the most flavor out of your expensive drip coffee, this machine is definitely for you. All of those automatic brew systems with self timing, “dial-in-your-strength”, digital features are nice and convenient but probably don’t even come close to maximizing the quality of Taste from your Jamaican blue Mountain Coffee. Of course, there are just a couple of nitpick items that I have to complain about. First, the carafe outlet is not optimal for pouring, but with a bit of learning how to pour from it, it’s a non-issue. Another small issue I have is that the particular model that I have has a plastic carafe platform at the bottom of the machine that detaches whenever the unit is moved and is tricky to get back into its grooves. A minor annoyance.
