   This is a nice coffee maker. Don’t get me wrong. Moccamaster makes good coffee and produces said coffee quite quickly once loaded up so make no mistake about that. However, I will be returning my Moccamaster and reverting back to pour over methods. Here’s why: 1) Cheap plastic parts and design shortcomings. As others have mentioned, many of the Technivorm pieces are flimsy plastic afterthoughts that don’t give using this machine a high-end feel. The funnel cover and hot water dripper can be easily knocked out of place and the pot itself scrapes the heating plate when put beneath the dripper. It gets annoying needing to be so careful to collect the parts properly and not break or displace anything. 2) Water basin is not removable. As far as cleaning goes, it’s not straightforward as the water basin is screwed in. I understand the thinking here – it’s only purified water that goes in there so why clean it? Would be better if this was removable. 3) Inefficiency. Probably the biggest issue for us. With the Moccamaster versus a pourover, I found we needed 7-8 double tablespoon scoops (~16 tablespoons) for 2-3 cups of coffee vs 12 tablespoons using a Chemex pour over for the same number of cups. I was using way more coffee with the moccamaster compared with pourover methods as the drip method is simply not as efficient. This issue is not unique to the moccamaster but there are likely smarter machines at saturating the grounds. 4) The two-setting hot plate functionality is problematic because it’s always on when the coffee maker is on meaning the coffee is constantly heating up in the pot while the funnel is still dripping. When making a bigger pot (8+ cups), the coffee ends up tasting overheated. 5) No timer. A $300 coffee makers should have a timer or at least more features than simply dripping hot water over coffee beans.

   OK, so this is really expensive and you don’t get even any of the basic modern features you’d expect on a $20 machine like auto start or ‘bold’ versus ‘regular’ setting. What you DO get, however, is what I consider to be a great coffee experience and a rather unique and fun to operate machine. The boiler kicks on with kind of a dull roar, and then bubbles come through the center column in the water tank. I was surprised at how quiet it was. I think this is because of the weird drip funnel thing that extends down into the carafe. I like being able to watch the water bubble up from the center column, and it’s also fun to be able to pull off the grounds cover and watch the coffee grounds become saturated with water. I was really worried about regretting my purchase because of the price, but to my surprise I’m enjoying the thing. I’ve had no problems with the machine at all. If you’re the kind of person that might impulse buy a $300+ coffee machine because it’s cool and made of metal and comes in pretty colors, I don’t think you’re going to regret this at all.

   We have been drinking premium Peets freshly ground Sumatra coffee for a while now and kept noticing that our embarrassingly cheap Black & Decker coffee maker was brewing bitter tasting coffee more and more regularly. The hunt was on for a better coffee maker and the Moccamaster appeared to be the best choice given we didn’t need any fancy electronics and just wanted a filter coffee maker where we ground our own beans. As a taste test, we brewed 12oz of Peets Sumatra (3 tbsp) with filtered water with the Black & Decker and the Moccamaster. The Moccamaster was 90 seconds faster on the brew cycle. We taste tested pure black coffee and the bitterness of the Black & Decker was amazingly apparent. The Moccamaster brew was very smooth, earthy and tasted GREAT! Super happy with this coffee maker. Granted we were using a cheap coffee maker in the taste test but it showed us how a “real” cup of coffee can taste like at home!

   If you love great coffee, buy this machine. When I say great coffee, I mean the kind of coffee you would expect and get from your favorite local coffee roaster/café or quality coffee shop (think Starbucks or Peet’s, NOT the tasteless brown water that Dunkin’ Donuts sells). I’ve wanted a Moccamaster since I first saw one and tasted the coffee it makes while a college student, way back in the 1980s. Owning one at the time was impractical and unattainable, so I moved on. Over the intervening thirty years, I’ve always lingered enviously over the store displays whenever I encountered them, but never made the plunge—the machine was just too expensive. That being said, I’ve owned the best coffee makers from Braun, Krups, Kitchen Aid, and Breville, all of which made decent coffee. In fact, the Breville made great coffee, although its cost was dangerously close the the Technivorm’s. That machine was the no-longer-available Breville BKC600XL Gourmet Single-Cup Coffee Brewer—the only Keurig system coffee maker the brewed hot enough for decent extraction. That machine lasted eight years, but finally shorted out due to perforation of the boiler element because of it’s aluminum construction. WHAT DID I CONSIDER? I researched and considered buying two machines other than the Moccamaster: one from Breville, the Breville BDC650BSS Grind Control, Silver, and one from Behmor: Behmor Connected Temperature Control Coffee Maker. Both of these machines should make very good coffee, but I ultimately decided on the Moccamaster for several reasons, which I’ll explain below. If the Moccamaster were’t so much better, or not available, I think either of these machines would be a good option, but note that they’re still expensive, so the choice was easy. WHY DID I CHOOSE THE TECHNIVORM MOCCAMASTER? 1. Copper Heating Element—Almost all consumer coffee makers have aluminum heating elements. They will eventually corrode and short-circuit the machine. When this happens, cut the cord off and THROW IT AWAY. This assumes it’s been plugged into a GFCI outlet. If it isn’t, it will keep working despite the short. You’re not only out of compliance with the local electrical code no matter where you live in the United States, but you’re playing Russian roulette with your life. A copper element will heat virtually instantaneously, and it will last many years. Copper heating coils are customarily found in better espresso machines, and this quality feature sets the Moccamaster apart from the rest of the field. 2. Replaceable Parts—The Moccamaster has a modular construction which makes most parts user-replaceable. Other parts, such as the copper boiler, switches, etc., will be replaced quickly and at minimal cost by Technivorm’s US service facility after the warranty expires. The warranty is five years. 3. Proper Brewing Temperature and Extraction Time—Good coffee require HOT, but not boiling, water. Most coffee makers just don’t heat the water enough. The copper element in a Moccamaster heats the water to 196–205º, and has optimal flow-through for the best extraction. This results in coffee that is rich but not overpowering, with a “thick” body and smooth mouthfeel, and no sediment or separation. 4.    So I’m not sure why this machine is so well liked around the coffee community. I recently purchased a Breville espresso machine and saw that everyone on the forums who knew anything about coffee had the Moccamaster sitting on their counter. I’m starting to think its more of a status symbol than anything else. Anyway, below is my initial review after having it for a few days. First Impressions: I was able to purchase the white 59461 KBG for a steep discount. This was honestly the only reason I bought it as I would never pay full price for this machine. The first unit that shipped was broken… the hot plate was missing a square inch of enamel from its surface. You’ll find this to be a common issue among other reviewers. The replacement unit coffeemakers.us.com sent took a few extra days but arrived safely. Build quality was just OK- It’s really nothing special. Don’t expect to feel the “wow factor” that usually accompanies frivolous purchasing of a premium priced appliance. I was really disappointed that all the plastic components felt cheap and brittle. It reminds me of using the $4.99 thrift store coffee maker my grandmother had when I was a young lad; It even looks the part to an extent. First Use: First time setting it up took maybe 10 minutes; everything went together easy enough. There are only two switches on this machine which could be seen as a positive or negative depending on what you were expecting. Fortunately, I was expecting a no-frills machine so having one switch for power and one switch for the hot plate was more than satisfactory. The coffee was made in no time and it actually tasted really good… It was some of the best drip coffee I’ve had in a long time. Pros: -Makes coffee faster than any machine I’ve used -Quiet operation -Ease of use -Makes a damn good cup of coffee Cons: -Cheap parts all around. I don’t feel I got what I paid for -Price is ridiculous -Not easy cleaning the water tank. I will need to invest in tablets… yet another expense -Looks like my grandma gave me her old coffee maker Would I buy it again? NOPE. It makes a damn good cup of Joe but the quality isn’t there.

   I purchased this coffee maker about a month ago and couldn’t be happier. I had read some of the reviews and was a little concerned but went ahead with the purchase anyway. I couldn’t be more pleased with it. The brewing style keeps coffee from being “boiled” which gives it a smoother taste without all the coffee grinds collecting at the bottom of your pot. Coffee stays very hot for at least an hour. Only drawback is there is no pre-set timer but truth is it brews so quickly and perfectly that I didn’t even notice the need for one after using it a few times. It is more expensive than your average coffee maker but the design and function makes it worth the price. Highly recommend.

   Disclaimer: This machine is worth the price. If you stick to the instructions and regularly maintain the brewer – I can only heap praises towards the product and the crew who developed it. In four years of use, drinking a consistent cup of coffee or brewing for the household has never been easier. I do love this machine. I would recommend anyone to purchase it – ten times out of ten. What I don’t love so much? The following: – References the photos – the plastic used on some of the most used items is inexcusably thin/cheap. For a machine so costly, this should not be the case. – I have reached once already for the coffee pot. The company did replace once with a disclaimer that they would not do it again. I’m disappointed in that response. – The coffee scooper is another disappointment. The plastic is too thin. It is designed not to last long or require a replacement. I have not reached out to the company for a replacement. I will and will update this review. – Both items failed after only a year’s worth of normal usage. I would offer this would happen to anyone who uses this 4 – 5 times a week. Bottom line: Do I have regrets – no. This machine makes a consistent cup of coffee every time. I am not happy with the physical quality of the coffee pot or coffee scooper. Both pieces of equipment were either overlooked in the design process or where the company decided to intentionally cut costs – forcing customers to purchase those items from them directly.

   First let me say that I am not a coffee snob what do you like my coffee in the morning. The very first thing about this coffee maker is it is beautiful. It is easy to clean and gives you a very hot pot of coffee quickly that tastes great. It is very easy to use. If I have any complaints about this coffee maker and I’ve had quite a few, it is the carafe although it is a quality carafe made a glass the cover on it pops off quite easily it when you’re trying to clean. It would be very easy to break the glass if you’re not paying attention to it since it is on the thin side. A replacement carafe is almost $40. Also when poring a full pot you must do it slowly or you’ll make a mess dripping it on your counter.Other than that it is on the pricey side but it works nice and looks great.

   Overall, we like it a lot but were expecting a little bit more for the price. Highlights: The most important thing is that coffee does taste great with a smooth texture and would think this is the most important thing. So, if you are looking for an incredible cup of coffee, then it does meet that threshold. It is easy to adjust coffee flavor to your tasting. While it does have many plastic parts, is easy to operate; This is a plus, you just turn it on and “presto”; if you forget to turn it off, it will do automatically in 100 minutes. Who needs more than those features? It is easy to clean and maintain. It looks super cool and looks even cooler when brewing coffee… As it promises, it brews the coffee very fast, and in fact this might be its greater “con” because when you get something at high temperature that fast it also gets cold fast, therefore I often have to take my cup to be reheated in the microwave. We struggled with choosing in between the glass and thermal carafes. We made the mistake of going with the glass one. We thought that being a modern coffeemaker, coffee was not going to taste burned if left there, but were wrong. Like with any other coffeemaker that does have a hot-plate to keep coffee warm, it does burn the taste. If we could, we would change for the thermal carafe… (Moccamaster, can you exchange for a better review?). The water container shows a capacity for 10 cups… no way! at most you will get 4 1/2 cups. In fact, if you want just one cup, you have to fill it at 2 1/2 their measurement to get 1 cup. I do not understand why they can’t fix this. Assume that having a measurement of 10 cups looks and sells better? Overall, we are satisfied with it because of the great taste, cool looks and easiness to operate. UPDATE 2020 and 2021: After using the Coffee Machine for a few months we noticed it started to get green at the bottom of the water reservoir but inside the components. It was mold. We used everything we could to clean it without success (Descaling it and typical coffee makers cleaners). We called the company to learn more about this. They where not helpful and mentioned it was a problem with our water and the only thing they could do is open the machine and clean it for us at a cost of $99 plus shipping…. What? In spite of knowing I was going to void my warranty, I had no more option than to look into YouTube to check how I could open it up and clean it. I was able to do it and was a simple process. I had to take all parts off and clean it really well as in fact a lot of Mold was accumulated there. Now we know we have to do this process every few months. We change our rating to 3 stars because of this and Technivorm should have a disclosure that this can happen and ways to fix it (clean it) without voiding your warranty. Perhaps they need to change the design to be able to open and clean that area easier without the need to go through unassembling the components. Coffee still taste great, although I feel coffeemaker is not working as originally promised.

    For my initial review, I’ll summarize the improvements to the flavor of my coffee (it’s ridiculous ), and my brew process. After a few weeks, I’ll give an update on how it’s been going. It’s been two weeks and I still can’t get over how much better coffee tastes from the Technivorm. The previous machine was a 20 year old Mr Coffee. (Side note: It had been in the cupboard and used when having friends who wanted coffee, so about 5 times.) Meaning, same basic drip-brew principles. Doing a side-by-side comparison gave crazy, huge noticeable difference. Tried 3 different types of coffee and all from the same grind and using the same weight. Got the same results: It’s. Un. Be. Liev. A. Ble. My brew process: 1) Start with fresh beans (monthly coffee clubs are highly recommended). 2) Burr grinder with a slightly larger grind to get a smoother (less bitter) flavor. 3) Weigh ground coffee to get 43 grams to 5 cups (it’s less than the golden ratio, but it’s MY coffee) 4) Heat your mug / cup (get it hot so the coffee transfers well and stays hotter longer) 5) Filtered water (mine is from the fridge door using its filter) 6) Using Technivorm’s filters (they’re paper and a perfect fit making it easier to pour in the ground coffee) 7) Rinse the filter BEFORE putting in the machine (just to make sure I remove any possibility of the paper tainting coffee flavor) 8) Pour coffee grounds into filter 9) Flip switch 10) Enjoy coffee in about 2 minutes! After a couple months, I’ll post an update on how the coffee is doing and any thoughts on keeping her in tip-top shape.

    Sounds like lot of coffee shops and aficionado are over-hyping the execution of Moccamaster (And I also bought into the hype after I recently tried a coffee at one of my family member’s place who had purchased Moccamaster. The coffee tasted fantastic and hence I also opted to order one for myself). If I am paying $300+ on a coffee maker, I expect it to be executed perfectly. Meaning every coffee machine should give you SCA Gold Standard Certified Cup. But it does not unfortunately. Here are the pros and cons. After speaking with Moccamaster support they openly lie to you which I did not appreciate blaming that you as a consumer are not following the guided instructions. Pros: 1. Quality of the machine seems to be great. 2. It works as designed meaning copper heating element which keeps the temp high as recommended by SCA. 3. Brews clean up 4. Carafe is easy to pour from Now the hard part! Cons: 1. The spout with 7 holes seems to not sit tight inside water container where hot water is pushed up the channel. This is where the problem starts. 2. After trying different region coffees, grinds, roasts (medium light, medium, medium dark, dark); I had the same result. Very Bitter to Bitter coffee (un-drinkable). It looks like if you see the photo, the coffee grounds are over-saturated in small area with high temp water causing coffee grounds to burn and extract bitter taste. The shower nozzle also does not cover the entire coffee grounds as one can see from the photo. It seems like the water pressure varies in some of these coffee machines causing a saturation point and/or the heating element is shooting the water at higher temps and not soaking the grounds evenly. I brought this issue of bitter coffee taste to Moccamaster support. It seems to me like they know the problem with some of their machines running hot and/or soaking the grounds unevenly. I had to experiment for myself and went down from brewing full 10 cups to 4 cups, it is then when I found the issue as you see in the photo. In my opinion I would not buy this machine until this issue is fixed. There are alternate drip-coffee maker brands, SCA certified with big round even shower nozzles will make you a Gold Cup Standard Coffee.

    I enjoy this coffee maker -so much. Switched over from the kcups. I was sick of stale coffee. Decided I wanted to be a coffee snob and drink fresh ground coffee in the mornings. Everyone who I make a cup for comments on how smooth the coffee tastes. I think it has to do with the way the water spreads evenly over the coffee and the copper heating system. I had considered getting a coffee maker with a built in grinder but I did a lot of research and read a lot of reviews from different sites, my conclusion was, you either end up with a good coffee maker or a good grinder but never both in one maker. So I ended up buying both separately. My next endeavor was finding the coffee bean I liked best. That was fun, I started off going to local coffee shops and buying beans. Then I stumbled onto a company based out of Tennessee that is veteran owned and gives proceeds from their sales to the troops. “Black Rifle Company” I haven’t tried everything yet, but “coffee or die” is by far my favorite coffee EVER. I tried this coffee in my Keurig for a single cup and their definitely is a difference in taste based on how it’s brewed. This is a great coffee maker. With the money.

    So, as you can see by my rating, I love this machine. At 4.5 stars as of this review date, I see most of my fellow purchasers are also satified. Out of complete curiosity I browsed the bad ratings- to be as helpful as I can with my review instead of singing the phrases of my machine like other reviews I’ll address some of the complaints about the machine and give my counter view. Price. Ok, we’re not including the basic machines out there, I’ll assume if you’re looking at this machine you’re looking for a PREMIUM machine. Maybe like me looking for a machine certified by the SCAA (Specialty Coffee Association of America) or its European equivalent association. I pulled 3 familar branded machines from their website and got their current prices and ratings on coffeemakers.us.com (dropping the cents) Bonavita BV1900TS $133 (4 stars), Cuisinart Pure Precision Pour Over Coffee Brewer $167 (4 stars), Kitchen Aid Pour Over Coffee Brewer $149 (3.5 stars). So they hover around the same costs and their reviews aren’t terrible, but they’re also not higher than this machine. Yes. This machine is expensive when you compare it with some of the other SCAA certified machines (basically 2x the cost). I am willing to bet that at least 2 of 3 of those machines are made in countries where the labor is typically cheap (sorry Asia), that’s not a ding on their quality per se, just how they get costs low. A quick glance at their coffeemakers.us.com descriptions didn’t really seem to say. ALL OF THEM likely made by machines supervised by people as opposed to a handmade coffee maker such as this (again addressing costs). HANDMADE speaking generally- is a lost art, is usually higher quality, longer lasting, and more beautiful than its machine made counterparts, and always more expensive. My personal machine is also brass. It’s freaking gorgeous by the way, but brass DOES cost more than plastic. A cursory view of the other 3 machines are all black, plastic, and no premium metal choices or COLORS that I can see. Yes, yes, to some that doesn’t matter, BUT plastic IS cheaper. Not saying plastic can’t be quality, just saying metal is going to be more expensive. These are all things that will add to cost, and really, what’s wrong with also wanting a GOOD LOOKING machine, they do sit on the kitchen counter. Options are nice. So the majority of coffee experts and/or coffee snobs agree, pour over is the BEST way to make coffee. The machines that are SCAA certified SIMULATE A POUR OVER. I ran a quick cost comparision for the tools to brew a proper pour over. For a MANUAL burr, pour over kettle (WITH a thermometer) and a pour over carafe with filter approximate cost is $104. If you do the same set up but with an electric burr about $160. Costs are low here, however, this requires also that you have the time to fuss over the temp of your water, grind your beans if you’re going manual and have the patience to properly pour your water over the grinds. I’d be willing to do this on my days off, I love a ritual, but that’s exactly what it is, a ritual that takes time. One of the most adament reviewers against this machine doesn’t like the way the holes in the machine’s arm distributes the water. Says that at least on their machine it doesn’t come out ALL the holes. My machine doesn’t have this issue, I’m sorry they do. The water, as it is heated, comes out in bursts, so yes sometimes the initial holes get some of the water but during the peak of the bursts all the holes have water coming out. My grinds get fully saturated (and I’m attaching picture proof). What I find kind of amusing about the reviewer’s beef with this is that just looking at the other machines I don’t believe that reviewer would even be ABLE to observe how the water is distributed in order to complain about it, they are enclosed units. That’s one of the VERY neat features of this machine, you see just about everything that goes on and I find it rather mesmerizing. I’ll admit until I read that review I didn’t think to take the lid off the coffee filter portion to observe the water arm, the lid keeps the heat in while the water soaks the grinds. The way this machine dispenses the water definitely seems to simulate a good pour over with proper temperature and good timing to allow the grinds to soak properly. Now to address another gripe that has been mentioned, the plastic parts that DO exist on this machine which is few. My initial reaction is, um, SO? Again the 3 I pulled from the SCAA list are primarily plastic. Here is my counter for how this particular company does it. Yes, the lid of the water reservoir and all of the coffee filter basket come off the machine. To some they feel flimsy, to me they are light but very sturdy, and I personally very much appreciate the ability to take them entirely off the machine and give them a good cleaning. Try and do that with a hinged lid on a water reservoir or the permanent filter basket on a traditional machine and I say no fun. Also, having worked with a lot of kitchen appliances and tools, hinges can often be a weak point in design with a LOT things, I really like how this machine has so very little that could go wrong with it. Simple is wonderful. I also appreciate that the company boasts that ALL of the parts of this machine are fully recyclable. I will also mention that I don’t find that the tabs that hold the brew basket in place are at all flimsy either. The glass carafe. Also apparently a point of contention with some reviewers. They say it’s too thin making it feel cheap to them and they’d expect a machine of this cost to have…better(?) glass. My counter, some of the best/finest glass out there is not pyrex people. “The best” wine glasses are butterfly wing thin. Ok, fragile, but the best tool for the job. Then you have the other end of the spectrum, gorilla glass and the equivalent on your cell phones. Thin, and durable. Imagine that. This carafe is gonna fall somewhere in between all that in durability. Yes, the glass on this carafe is thin, light, elegant dare I say- but I don’t think it’s any less fragile than the other glass out there on coffee machines. I don’t know what other people are doing with their coffee machines but I’ve yet to break one. It’s got a wide mouth, the lid comes off (though it has a hinge) and it is all very, very easy to clean. There is also a complaint about how the carafe itself pours. It does have a smaller lip and I’m willing to bet this is also by design, to keep heat in. You can’t expect to pour “quickly” as the lip of the carafe can be overwhelmed easily. Personally I’ve yet to spill a drop of coffee. It’s just different. No, there are no clocks. No timers. These would negate the whole “best way to brew is a pour over”. Grinding your beans the night before per the coffee experts would be a “no no” (though I’m not personally against it, and have done it with other machines). So if you want all of that I’m pretty sure that there isn’t going to be an SCAA certified machine that does that. I like that there is a simple on/off, and LOVE there is a lower/higher heat button on the hot plate (I’ve never had a machine with that feature). No buzzing, or dinging, just the simple sound of water boiling. If you need all of that fancy stuff then the likelyhood is you’d be better off with your basic drip coffee brewer, this machine or its equivalents are not for you. There is nothing wrong with just going to a traditional drip coffee maker, to me these are two completely different monsters. Like the difference between an espresso maker and a drip brewer. Yes, this is a European machine. It’s going to have measurements in European terms. The cups are not as big over there as they are here. That happens to suit my personal tastes, it may not yours. The cord is long and thick, to me that’s a durable thing- to others it is cumbersome and unnecessary. I tethered mine with a cord keeper. It does not sit on the counter in a traditional way, you can place it any way you want but because of the design I prefer it sideways on my counter as the product pictures show. It’s easier for me to operate that way and I can see it better, for once I have a coffee brewer that I LIKE to see on my counter. So yes, it’s definitely not something most people are used to coming out of a traditional brewer market. These are all things to consider! So I hope I’ve addressed some of the things that would put doubt into your head about quality of this machine if you were on the fence- maybe I even convinced you to go another direction and buy another SCAA certified machine (and there are quite a few more you can look into), go with a traditional drip brewer or do a pour over set up instead. Any way you slice it, you should be happy with your decision. I am extremely happy with mine. I like to buy quality- that I only have to buy ONCE. I think this Technivorm and I will be together till death do us part. For me, in the end it’s about simplicity. Machines and technology don’t always mix. I have a 49 year old car in my garage that has seen multiple newer cars run through my fingers and it still runs like a top. More appropriately I also have a 79 year old toaster that works like a dream. What they have in common is no frills, do my job and do it good, simplicity and they’re built WELL. I expect that this beautiful machine will do the same.

    We have been in the market for a coffee maker for several years, we had a Cuisnart maker that produced okay coffee but one had to ad 25% more coffee to the hopper to get a decent brew. We had visited an Airbnb and nearly wanted to steal the Krups coffee maker as it produced a great brew. We looked online for the model but Krups stopped making that unusual style of maker years ago. We felt we might go back just to nab that unusual krups maker. Mostly we felt we were out of luck as most makers are of the same cheap design where the hot plate doubles as the water heater. My brother mentioned Moccamaster, after watching a few YouTube videos the Moccamaster seemed like a good choice as we simply wanted decent coffee as home. We ordered the Moccamaster and are happy with our purchase. Pro: Works well for 1 small cup of coffee as 10 (4 Oz) cups of coffee, less coffee waste no need for excess coffee to get a great brew. The Con: The “showerhead spout” is decidedly a gimmick as the water does not spray out nor drop uniformly, the water usually drizzles to one side. The shortcoming: The warmer turns of in just about one hour, I often return to get a new cup and find the warmer off. It would be nice if the warmer had an adjustable timer or went for 90 minutes. Office: This maker only produces up to 40 ounces of coffee at a time or in Starbucks terms two Venti (large) sized coffees which is not suitable for most offices.

    I’m hardly a coffee snob, but I do appreciate a good cup of coffee. I also appreciate buying products from places where employees are taken care of (for sake of argument – at least somewhat) fairly and produce a quality product, so I really wanted to buy a product that was manufactured in the US or Europe. Check, this met the requirement, so I was willing to justify the $330 price tag for a machine that only makes a small pot of coffee. I was shocked to find that the coffee tasted sour and just plainly gross. I was using great quality beans, filtered water, and following the instructions as stated. Well after researching I found that the lead drivers of sour coffee are bad beans (not applicable) and bad brewing (so I dived into this one). There is a huge design flaw with this machine. Other reviewers complained that the water only worked through a few of the drain holes in the metal arm. While more water certainly flowed through the first few holes, all did in fact work for us. Even so, you can see how my coffee brewed. HALF of the beans were not brewed AT ALL. They were completely dry to the touch. What does this mean? Besides a huge waste of money that you spend on your coffee, you get an incredibly inconsistent, often sour cup of coffee. If you take the time to mix the grounds it does taste noticeably better, but who opens his/her coffee machine to mix the grounds in every batch of coffee they make? The answer should be no one. This is a $330 coffee maker with a design flaw that the metal arm does not extend far enough to correctly brew the beans in the filter. Unfortunately we will reach out to customer service as they asked, but plan on returning this machine and just buying a cheaper one that correctly brews coffee. Don’t believe the hype.

    This is a work in progress and in all fairness the people at Moccamaster have been nice, concerned and responsive. So I will update this again when the issue is resolved.. or not. I was impressed with the quality as far as it goes, when i set it up it seemed to work great, but when I went to remove the old grounds I noticed the grounds on the right side were dry. So then I kept the filter cover off to watch the outlet arm theoretically distribute the hot water evenly over the grounds. But as you’ll see the water only came out of the first 2 of the 9 holes. I called Moccamaster, again very nice very concerned and their first thought was my counter was not level. Well, I happen to have a very precise level and my counter was absolutely dead level. I then put a level on the base of the machine and it was level. I then put one on the top of the outlet arm and it was a full 1/2 bubble off. The customer service people sent me a new outlet arm and it looked better, just 1/3 bubble off level. But still not enough to get the hot water past the first couple holes. I’m curious current owners when you watch a typical brew cycle for a minute does hot water flow evenly out of all the holes in the outlet arm??? Honestly to me it seems that the holes are so large that its unlikely they flow out of the last holes as well as the first. Possibly a design flaw. Maybe the nearer holes should be smaller and the further out holes should be larger. Keep in mind there will be an initial blast of tepid water with the first perk. This is because the cooler water in the glass tube isn’t boiling but being forced up by the boiling water below it. That first perk has a larger volume of water than the remaining perks, the initial blast on mine does reach the far side of the outlet arm but none of the perks after that. Update 2-27-17 they saw my video and confirmed there was an issue, they have asked me to send them my unit and they are sending me a new one. Update 3-21-17 Once again the folks at Moccamaster were very nice and responsive, they acknowledged the issue shown in my video and I received the new unit, it may be slightly better than the first one but after now watching two units function its clear to me there is a basic and kinda dumb design flaw. The outlet arm has so many large holes in it that only the first 3 really flow water. the remaining holes seldom show any discharge of hot water…maybe a drop occasionally. Do not think the first perk with its higher volume of tepid water is typical of the rest of the perks. The coffee is not beig brewed by this high volume low temp initial blast of water. its being brewed by the subsequent high temp perks of boiling water. Why with all this thought and hand assembled engineering wouldn’t they make the first few holes smaller. or have less of them so that every perk sprayed/distributed hot water evenly over the grounds like a Bunn or Cuisinart or many other mid level coffee makers. i’ll bet most folks who have given this 5 stars never really tuned into how it really functions.

    The MoccaMaster merits all the praise and hype. Expensive? Yes, about 100 Grande cups of fancy coffee at your neighborhood barista’s stand. But, the freshness, flavor, quick brewing time, and consistently brewed coffee are unbeatable. A lot of coffee makers have passed through my kitchen’s countertop, including French Press, single drip, fancy drip machines and a host of others claiming to have perfected the art of drip coffee making. None come close to the MoccaMaster. Handmade the old fashioned way by the Dutch, who are renown for their craftsman ship. If you’ve been holding out because you didn’t believe a coffee maker with such a simple design could brew the best coffee you’ve tasted, wait no longer.

    Had a heckuva good cup of coffee today, thanks to this thing. On the plus side, it brewed 8 cups in under six minutes, produced coffee that rivals any coffee shop I’ve had, seems well built with solid feeling switches, heavy duty power cord(14/3 ?). Actually is smaller than i imagined it to be, doesn’t occupy a bunch of counter space, the clear tube shows brewing percolation’s but isn’t overwhelming cool. On the minus side, why not mark the glass pot with cup increments? I could then use the carafe to fill the reservoir without guessing how full it will be once the water is poured in. Brick red is a bit closer to true red than the pictures show, but still works well for us. The coffee basket\lid\sprinkler wand arrangement is a little funky in how it assembles together once fresh grounds are added, but only one or two more steps are needed when compared to the good ol’ auto drip we just benched. The user manual explains why they don’t offer models with timers built in, saying that leaving water and coffee in the machine waiting to brew will yield a lesser cup of coffee. Whatever. Since the on\off switch is a maintained one(not momentary), I could conceivably set the Moccamaster switch to on and use some sort of inline timer or fancy outlet timer if i really want to wake up to the aroma of coffee.

    It really does make great coffee! I started with the Bunn Velocity but returned it due to weak coffee and the hot plate burning it, decided to bite the bullet and buy the Techni Vorm Moccamaster and I’m so glad I did. I’ve had it for a month now and couldn’t be happier, coffee tastes great, and you don’t have to use a lot of grounds to get a great tasting pot. I also love that the hot water isn’t stored in a plastic reservoir like a lot of other coffee makers, you pour the water in and as soon as you turn it on it bubbles down into the copper heating coils and then out over the grounds into the pot, this limits the amount of time hot water is sitting in plastic. Love that. The hot plate has two settings which is nice too. I highly recommend this coffee maker.

    I bought this unit when I started roasting my own coffee because I wanted a reliable baseline for comparison. While I love a good pour over (and regularly enjoy them), I kept find myself struggling to assess the quality of my roasts. I knew that my pour over technique wasn’t consistent enough to let me compare effectively. But a machine like this would. Truth be told, I bought this unit over other great units because it is beautiful. I love the look, and want a collection of them in different colors (I’ve resisted so far). I settled on black because the aesthetic of my coffee business worked well with it. It has exceeded my expectations. The coffee produced is excellent. The brewer pulses water through a shower head in a way that lets the coffee bloom. The primary compliment of the coffee brewed with this unit were that it was incredibly balanced. All the notes were discernible, but none were overpowering. Typically when I make a pour over, there is a specific note that is prominent. The Technivorm balances all the notes beautifully. This has helped me assess my roasting quality better than any other tool I have. Not only does it produce excellent coffee in decent volume (great for brewing great coffee quickly when you have company), it also bailed me out during a coffee catering event. I was using the machines provided by the venue, but they weren’t keeping up. I decided to fire up the Technivorm to help keep pace. It did an incredible job, and yielded far better coffee than the other brewers I was using (which was to be expected). Overall, while I know there are other units out there that do a fantastic job in the 40oz brewed range, I would suggest the Technivorm all day long for looks alone. It is a pleasure to use, and I expect to get many, many years out of it.

    I have a “thing” about stuff that juts out onto the counter top – I’m not a fan of most coffee makers because they tend to take up a lot of counter space and in general they are not terribly attractive. THIS on the other hand is beautiful, beautifully made and makes fantastic coffee! – and it comes apart for cleaning! Absolute perfection! (I’ve uploaded a video of how this fits together) Pros: – Great coffee – Disassembles for cleaning – Takes up minimal counter space – Hoping quality construction lasts for many years Cons: – Pot “exits” from the side – you pull the pot out sideways to pour coffee instead of pulling toward you; not that big of a deal at all but wanted to mention it.

    I was skeptical about spending hundreds of dollars on a coffee maker, but after reading tons of reviews and drinking some fabulous coffee at my fellow Moccamaster owner’s home, I figured why not try one – we could always return it. My favorite coffee haunt is Philz and I realized it was unlikely I would be able (or willing) to re-create or invest in daily Philz coffee and calories, but my daily dose of bitter coffee wasn’t how it had to be. You know what they say about a bad smell…you get used to it. You can get used to mediocre coffee too. I conversed with the hubby and he decided it was time for a change, which I was shocked by since he is the last person to get excited about a pricey cup of coffee. Maybe he was just sick of me complaining about how disappointing my coffee was since I’d given up my beloved poison (I mean creamer), or maybe he was finally ready for that magical cup too. All nonsense aside, the hubby saw this on a BF special and next thing you know I’m drinking a smooth cup of joe without a side of bitterness. Literally or figuratively. Now we are excited to hunt down the perfect roasted beans worthy of our new morning gadget. I’ve read tons of reviews full of technical details, joys and complaints regarding this java maker, but from a simple lay person who really loves coffee, my verdict is it’s worth it. Why? I love my coffee sweet and creamy, so I thought I wouldn’t appreciate the difference, but the exact same coffee brewed in this pot tasted 100% better than what we brewed yesterday in the “other” pot. I was actually a little shocked because I kind of thought people were being a little pretentious and it was more of a placebo effect. I was wrong. The coffee aficionados were right. Thank goodness we took their advice. Bye bye Cuisinart. It’s been a good ride, but this girls wants more.

    I haunted the Moccamaster site and then read just about every review here on coffeemakers.us.com (and elsewhere). I posted several questions here before I committed to spending the most amount I could ever have imagined a coffee brewer could cost. I’d loved my classic Braun simple brewer, the one that’s no longer made that is in the Museum of Modern Art collection. The first thing that drew me to this, I’ll admit it, was its breathtaking design. So minimal, no clocks, no apps, no several anything else going on. Pure, refined elegance and now that I happily have it, maybe an amazing chemical/scientific process. The water goes down into the silver module where a copper something (I know, I know, there’s a proper word, other brilliant reviews detail the process) that heats the water to the golden cuppa temperature up close to 205 degrees while you quickly hear a gentle gurgle as the heated water is forced up before delicately showering the coffee grounds and then descending miraculously (ok, probably not miraculous) down the center of the coffee pot, quickly filling it with take-your-breath-away perfect coffee. Really it does what it promises, a full pot in five minutes, maybe less. I haven’t had a single drip gone awry as I pour into my cup, admiring the heat and fragrance that is a secondary gift. I used Peets Extra Dark French, smoky and rich, and it’s better than in a Peet’s own shop. It’s so easy to rinse the parts by hand (this might cost more than some dishwashers, it gets gently handled here!!). The cord is thick and black, on the side, not easily tucked out of sight. I finally was able to negotiate it to be behind the coffee pot. It’s rather impressive in its heft, not like most electric cords that are thin and fragile, destined to tucker out. This is a forever coffee machine that will make you toss out those little pods and regret ever indulging in that kind of process. This is pure heavenly coffee, brewed at perfect temperatures which in turn provides the fabled golden cuppa joe. There are so many reasons to say it’s crazy to spend this much but this is a heritage product, five year guarantee and I can tell from the questions I posted before I bought this that Moccamaster is very attentive to its customers. I wish that I had this my whole life. I just didn’t know better! From my questions, this is the easiest one, auto drip stop stuff, and honestly, aesthetically, the better balanced look of the glass carafes. It’s some kind of beauty, isn’t it.

    I’m hooked. I started buying fresh roasted beans a little over a year ago. I hated how a regular coffee maker seemed to waste the quality of my expensive beans. Then I started using a manual pour over method, which yielded great results. A birthday in the house came around and I used it as an excuse to spring for this Moccamaster. The flavor of the coffee that comes out of this machine is wonderful. It’s so cool to be able to tell the subtle differences in the beans. I was torn between this one and the Breville precision brew. I decided to go with this one because of the simplicity. It’s pretty hard to screw up coffee with a Moccamaster. So, no matter who is using it I know I’m in for a delicious cup when I wake up. The final thing worth mentioning is the speed. It takes about 7 min to brew a full pot. Coming from some one who used a Keurig for years, this is a great feature. By the time I’ve got my cup warmed up and done a few toe touches, coffee is ready. Only problem now is how wired I am from drinking all this great coffee.

    Makes great coffee without question. Research said that some have owned these 20 years without issues and that many service parts were available. Well, after 5 years the water reservior is cracking under the stainless transfer arm as a result of heat cycling (this coffee maker gets used everyday). I wrote customer service about a replacement tank and was told that I had to send in to them on my dime and that the repair would cost $99.00. They stated that the cause was “The cracks are characteristic of heat damage due to a slight blockage” This of course is a bunch of Malarky. The design is deficient for 5 years of usage in the case of the tank being exposed to the heated water passing over it by design. This is a very expensive coffee maker and I did expect more. Would have been happy to buy a replacement tank from them and do the work myself (this is not a complicated device). I did find a parts source in Europe that with shipping will still be less than half the cost of sending it to them.

    Seriously superior to any other coffee brewer we have ever owned. It is completely modular, so possibly the last coffee maker we will ever purchase. If a part breaks or fails, their customer service is apparently very helpful, just order the part and replace it. The boiler is copper, so it can achieve the proper temperature required to brew premium coffee. This is something I have researched extensively, as we favor a pour-over cup when time allows. From Espresso Insider: “It is cleverly built with two separate heating elements to monitor the heating plate and brewing temperature. These elements ensure to brew the coffee temperature between 198° to 205° and holding temperature of 176° to 185°”. For pour-over, we set our Bona Vita digital kettle to 207°F for best results. I challenge you to find another company to come close. Coupled with our Sonofresco roaster and Breville burr grinder, my wife and I enjoy a cup every morning that most folks only dream of or remember that one time from some obscure cafe.

    This Technivorm Moccamaster Coffee maker replaced a Wilfa coffer maker that we had gotten at Williams Sonoma almost 5 years ago. The Wilfa, also expensive and European made, made good coffee and was very stylish but Williams Sonoma had stopped carrying them and replacement parts were difficult to get. I had contacted the company in Europe on a couple of occasions and they were always responsive but less so with their American representative. When the motor finally gave way it was time to move on. I had looked at the Technivorm back when I ended up buying the Wilfa and I should’ve gone with the Technivorm back then. I love everything about this machine: it makes great, flavorful coffee (and I don’t use particularly expensive beans) and stays plenty hot enough for us. I’ve made just over 100 pots in it since the beginning of the summer and it…is…perfect. I love the simplicity; the cleaniblility; the 5 year warranty; the retro look. Yeah, go ahead and spend the $20 extra bucks and get the color you like (we got pistachio) – you’re going to have this machine a long time.

    I decided that I wanted the best coffee maker out there because I was tired of Keurig and the slime that builds up in the tank… no matter how much you descale it. After reading many reviews and watching America’s Test Kitchen reviews on best coffee makers, I went with this one. So HAPPY that I did. Besides the beauty of this machine, it brews quickly and at a perfect temp, consistently. I have also noticed that because it brews a perfect pot, it saves you money by not using as much ground coffee. It extracts the most flavor out of the beans and you don’t need as many tablespoons of the grounds. It is never bitter, just perfect. I also must recommend the best burr grinder to you as well. It is the Baratza Encore. I have never had one that grinds the beans, whichever size you choose, consistently. Wow… so impressed with both products. If you love coffee, treat yourself to the best. I don’t buy coffee out nearly as much now, which also saves me money. I do the cold brew (with the Gvode cold brewer… awesome) and now best hot coffee maker on the market. There really is a difference.

    This is the second Technivorm Moccamaster that I have owned. The first one lasted through 13 years of making excellent coffee. During that time, I only ran Descal (a descaling powder) through it twice. The coffee maker produced significantly better tasting coffee than any of the other drip coffee makers that I have used. Of course, to get good flavour you had to use quality coffee. I used to roast my own coffee beans, but once my roaster died I switched to Kicking Horse Three Sisters.
    When my original Technivorm finally went to appliance heaven, I looked at the price of a new one, and decided to get a cheaper unit by another reasonably reputable brand. The coffee out of the new unit didn’t taste the same, but I figured I could live with it. After a year of mediocre coffee, I threw in the towel and bought a new one. The new Technivorm produces coffee that is every bit as good as the old one, and as a bonus, it looks much more stylish. Hopefully it will last as long as the original one.
    Overall, the Technivorm is a coffee maker that doesn’t have any bells and whistles (such as a timer or Bluetooth/Wifi connectivity), but does make amazingly good coffee.

    The Technivorm Moccamaster is a great machine that produces some of the most aromatic and tasteful coffee I’ve ever had. As a traveler of the world, I’ve had coffee on every continent. I work for an Italian company and have had the black gold that is Italian coffee in Italy many many times. This is the real deal and I highly recommend the machine. That said, why not 5 stars? Because of one tiny quirky issue that could be fixed with ease by the manufacturer. . .a ‘keep warm’ function that does not auto-shutoff. The machine shuts off after 100 minutes. . another topic, why 100 minutes? Why not 90 or 120 or . ..anyway, I digress. . this is ok unless you make a full pot of coffee (10 cups) and want to keep in on warm all day as you consume it. I have to continue to remember to turn it on after every 100 minutes. . .a small thing but an annoying hassle nonetheless. Technivorm, fix this and I’m a full 5 stars. . maybe even 6 stars. The only real downside is the high price but hey, if you love coffee and you wanna enjoy. . . . just pay the man!
