   Edit update: partner didn’t want me to get another glass carafe, so I have kept using this one while waiting for a replacement. And I’m raising my rating to 4 stars because as long as I fill it and pour it out over the sink, the leak is slow enough to not matter. And I don’t let coffee sit in the grounds for more than 30 seconds anyway, as my doc said that will reduce the oxalates and help me avoid future kidney stones.

   I really like that the filter has a silicone rubber gasket and rinses easily. And I like that the carafe won’t break into dangerous pieces on the floor, some to be found much later by bare feet.
   What I don’t like is that after 10 months of daily (occasionally twice-daily) use, there are increasingly more drips of coffee on the counter under the carafe after pressing and pouring. I thought I was letting drips out but finally traced them to a long crack in the side of the carafe. Too bad, I guess I’ll get another GROSCHE glass beaker to use with the old metal parts from the previous Bodum

   This is the minimalist way to make coffee without using a machine or filters. Call it the ‘lazy artisan’. The next step would be an Italian Mokka Express, which is slightly more complicated and requires a bit more work. The French Press really just requires you to drop a few spoons of coffee ground into it and add hot water. After a couple of minutes slowly but steadily press down the mesh to separate the brew from the ground. Done right this makes a decent coffee for the fraction of ‘cartridge-coffee’. The BODUM is IMO the best one for the price. There is just one thing that the manufacturer seems to refuse to fix. These pop up quite often at thrift stores and they ALL have the same problem: The mesh is loose and slides up the rod when pushing it down, obviously messing up the whole basic idea of a coffee press. Keeping The Mesh In Place-Fix The reason why the mesh won’t stay down is that BODUM doesn’t want to spend the money on a metal fastener. The knob on the top is threaded to the rod. There is another thread at the bottom to keep the mesh parts in place. It finishes off with a cone shaped plastic piece so it stays in place. The problem is that this little piece of plastic isn’t up for constant use, hot water, and pressure. It strips or cracks and makes the whole apparatus unusable. There is a simple solution for this problem: A stainless M4 nut from the hardware store. I cut off a piece of the plastic fastener about the height of the new washer, put it back and topped it off with the new metal nut. Voila: Press is pressing again. Tres bien! Four stars from me. Even though I find them a good deal, the unwillingness to fix a known problem costs a star. I hope this helps to make a decision.

   Well made, simple design, French Press – mostly plastic construction. I originally felt like a plastic carafe gave a low quality feel to the product but I now prefer a nice durable plastic carafe over a more fragile glass one. This makes it less worrisome when cleaning and handling. The plastic seems to be pretty durable and I expect it to last. After countless of hand washes there doesn’t seem to be any hazing of the plastic and filter and seal on the press is holding up well. Overall happy with this purchase for a good durable and budget friendly French Press.

   French press is my favorite brewing technique, but I am clumsy and have small children. I have broken more French presses that I care to admit and had considered buying a metal one. However, I did not like not being able to see the coffee being brewed. I was very excited to see this plastic version which won’t break like glass but is still see-through. The handle and base are also plastic. If you want to remove the container during cleaning, you have to loosen a screw which can be done with a butter knife if you are like me and do not keep flathead screwdrivers near your sink. This French press weighs less than the glass/metal version and has a cheaper feel it. Although it may not impress anyone, I prefer a plastic container in one piece to a broken one that looks nice. I am very happy with this so far, I will be sure to update my review if it breaks or fails unexpectedly.

   This stain does not come out washing by hand or in the dishwasher. I’ve owned this hard plastic Bodum carafe about 6 months, maybe a little longer, but it’s been disclolored for awhile. If it’s stained from the coffee the plastic must be permeable. Does that mean that some of the plastic can leach out as well? Glass doesn’t stain or discolor, it can be washed clean. You decide if you want to risk drinking plastic molecules. I bought a glass carafe today, and for the first time with the new carafe I also had no grounds in my cup. Unfortunately the Bodum press screen must not be quite right because I always had a few grounds in my cup. I didn’t mind much, but it’e nice to have my new glass coffee press make a better cup also

   This French press works well, and I’m not afraid of my grandson (or wife!) breaking it, but the overall feel is pretty cheap-y. The plastic cannister could’ve been a bit thicker to hold in the heat better, and the plunger/filter piece feels very cheap.
   Still, I would buy it again. Hopefully though, since it’s shatterproof I won’t have to!
   EDIT: Yes, I did end up having to buy a new French press far sooner than I had expected to. The plastic does not appear to be able to withstand near-boiling water for long, which is too bad since it’s meant to brew hot coffee!
   I have now replaced it with a metal French press and hoping that it will last a few years.

    Product: Bodum Java French Press Coffee So got this, despite that it’s plastic, because Bodum is usually a good brand. Unfortunately it arrived used (? Open box?) One of the feet was broken and the bottom was terribly scratched. Sides are also scratched a little. It smells like old coffee and there are traces of coffee grounds left in the filter mesh and bottom of carafe. Seems to be functional (as french press is a simplistic design), but disappointing. Biggest lesson here is: THE PLASTIC SCRATCHES but carafe doesn’t break (though the outer foot broke) Less expensive but you get what you pay for or you get less than what you pay for if it scratches and breaks.

    The most striking thing about this press is that it weighs next to nothing. I was surprised by the box and just how light it was when I got it. The construction of the whole press is is plastic with exception of a few metal parts such as the fasteners, the plunger, and the filter material. This makes it a great option for travel and camping as its light weight and durable construction make it easy to pack. Yet there is no sacrifice in daily use; the press produces fantastic coffee, the filter works great, and there is no plastic taste imparted to your brew. However, this press definitely has a flaw and it’s with the plunger. A normal press would have the metal filter press up directly against the glass. Such a design would scratch the surface of this press so Bodum have designed it with a silicone edge around the plunger which is likely to be the first part that will need to be replaced. Secondly, instead of using a metal frame for the plunger, Bodum have opted to use a plastic frame. The result is that the metal filter does not quite sit flat and this tends to trap grinds requiring a bit more effort to clean up and leaving more grinds in your sink. If you don’t have a need for the more durable construction and the light weight, I’d recommend the classic Bodum press. But for travel, camping, and durability, this is a great option.

    The package was delivered some time last night, I opened it up this morning and the top was already busted. The metal screen filter isn’t even correctly attached to the unit either. I want a refund but there is no option for a refund without returning the broken item and I’m not paying to ship a piece of junk back to the manufacturer so I’ll just buy a hopefully better made product elsewhere.

    Works absolutely the same way – and as well – as the glass models. I’ve gone through 2-3 of the glass versions over the years . . . all have cracked, in spite of careful use. In all other ways, it is a good “French” press, without the downside.

    I have loved this design for over a decade, but the glass cylinder carafes did break fairly regularly. This one is plastic and I was excited to try it. The carafe lasted 11 months of daily use and then it cracked and needed to be replaced. It does stain, too, so it is not as attractive as the glass carafe. Cleans easily. Very lightweight.

    I’ve had other french presses before, but I’ve broken a couple of carafes and it’s very upsetting. This one from Bodum, is not glass, but it’s just as good and easy to use as the others. It’s very lightweight and the press fits very well, nice & snug. The coffee is excellent too. A+

    home. The Bodum Java French Press Coffee Maker has been a great addition to my coffee routine. As someone who has had bad luck with glass French presses breaking, the plastic cup is a welcome feature. I appreciate that it is durable and won’t shatter if accidentally knocked over.

    However, like other reviewers have noted, the filter is not perfect and some coffee grounds do end up in the cup. But using a coarse grind and being careful when pouring can minimize this issue. I have also found that using a smoother filter from another French press can improve the overall performance of the Bodum Java.

    Overall, I think the Bodum Java French Press Coffee Maker is a solid choice for anyone looking for a durable and reliable option for their morning coffee routine. While it may not be perfect, with a little bit of care and attention, you can enjoy a delicious and fresh cup of coffee every morning.

    I am so happy to find this French press. I bought a similar one about 15 years ago and it is still going strong, although I do not have it with me so I needed another. This one is better, lighter, maybe stronger. Yes, it is plastic, but the glass one I bought last year broke, and that was just in the kitchen, which is why i decided on this one. I have used the stainless steel ones before and they are great, but heavy. These BPA free plastic ones are perfect for life on the move. I take mine on multi day hikes, it is so light, and that fresh coffee in the morning is something which can really begin a hiking day well!
