There was a comment about adjusting the arms for small beans, but I didn’t need to. The biggest issue was chaff; it has no chaff collector, but I found a really simple solution…air popcorn popper. After the beans are roasted and still warm (but cool enough to handled), I load a cup or so at a time into the popper, fire it up, give it a shake or two, and zero chaff. It takes 20-30 seconds per so plan on another 5 minutes or so after roasting.
I generally do about 400 grams to a City/Light-Medium Roast at 180degC, and use this coffee:

I use a medium grind (burr grinder) in a “4-cup” French Press (2+ cups), and it makes fruity, nutty, flavorful coffee. I go through about a pound a week. Seriously, you will hate the StarPlace, Pete’s, and the rest after this…it is simple, inexpensive, and so worth it for the flavor.

I had the machine for about a month when it started to malfunction. It is a circular machine with a nonstick surface, a hub with two curved wires sticking out from the hub to keep the beans turning and contacting the hot surface evenly. The machine is designed to rotate clockwise. When it does, the beans are turned nicely and they cook evenly. Very good. However, the electric motor that turns the hub started reversing and turning counterclockwise, causing the beans to not get even exposure to the hot surface of the base. As a result, i got some burned beans and the machine was rendered worthless. Fortunately, my coffeemakers.us.com rep treated me really well and I am going to look at options. He has sent me a refund and a UPS label. Great service by coffeemakers.us.com.

I had to return it because it was roasting unevenly with many beans piled up and pushed around by
the rotating arm, It did roast some coffee beans, so it would be ok if one doesn’t mind losing some unroasted beans. I spent more and bought the Fresh Roast electric roasted.

I have roasted about 7 batches of beans in this roaster so far, and I’m learning with each batch. The simplicity of this roaster is great, easy to load, easy to empty, easy to view the progress of the roasting. The instructions were not very good at all. It took some trial and error. Being my first time roasting coffee beans, the first couple of batches were under-done and undrinkable coffee. The time frames for the stages of roasting seem to be higher than that of drum roasters. I had to set the temperature up a few degrees more than it said to get to the first crack and then the second crack. Now that I think I have that figured out, it seems to work great.

Bought this one to replace the previous worn out roaster I had. It does a far better job than my previous one in giving an even roast. The controls are straight forward and all that is really required is to set a timer to key you to check for roast level. I turn the rheostat to 0 to allow the beans to cool down with the circulator still running. When It’s cool, then I turn off the power and disconnect. Cooling down is far better than attempting to remove the hot beans. You don’t want to inadvertently touch the hot plate.
The single most annoying thing is the clean up and chaff on the beans. Since the beans are only stirred during roasting the chaff clings to them and, since I don’t like that, I have to shake them in a colander to get some of the chaff off. Also, when you remove the top the chaff can spread a bit on your table. I roast my beans in a screened in sun room so to keep the chaff and the smoke out of the kitchen.

It does make nice, consistent coffee when it’s working. However, The heating elements stopped working after 6 months of use when using every week. I started to notice a subtle decline in heat before it just stopped heat. Not recommended for long term use.

I purchased this unit after leaving my other one with a friend. This roaster only lasted 9 months, with making about 1-1.5 pounds a month of coffee roast. The stirring element stopped in a middle of a roast and will no longer work. Very disappointed for the price, the infrequent use and it only lasted 9 months. I had a cousin buy one of these as well and his stopped working in less than 6 months. As you can see by the reviews, this is not an uncommon experience.

A fast and even roast. It is easy to operate and clean. If it is a durable product, it will have been worth every penny. That remains to be seen, but thus far I am very happy with the product.
