   This is my third Cusinart grind and brew coffee maker and they keep making them better. It’s used daily and I get about 12 to 15 years out of a unit. That’s pretty reasonable considering so many products are junk these days.

   I’ve tried six grind and brew (G&B) coffeemakers over the years. I bought two earlier Cuisinart models with blade instead of burr grinders and a Capresso Team with a burr grinder. I received Black & Decker and Krups G&B models and now this new Cuisinart G&B 850 through Vine. The Krups is not the most expensive [ASIN B075G7B98P], but it definitely gives the most flexibility adjusting the strength and is the only one that brews coffee strong and full bodied enough for me when using the whole bean grinder. Krups lacks a stainless carafe, but I can select a fine grind to truly make strong coffee tailored to my taste. I can’t do that with this Cuisinart. This new Cuisinart gives a medium grind only, so it’s not fully adjustable to my taste. Even using the strongest setting, tinkering with the coffee/water ratio and using a dark, full bodied, bold whole bean coffee from Starbucks (Caffe Verona), I can’t get a cup of coffee that’s strong and full bodied enough for my taste. The coffee brews hot enough and is an average, medium strength using the strongest setting on the Cuisinart. But the same whole beans make a perfect, strong cup of coffee using my Krups as I select a finer grind. While I can bypass the burr grinder and buy a pre ground, finer grind for the Cuisinart to get a stronger brew, that makes the burr grinder useless. That’s okay sometimes, but the point is to grind just before brewing for fresher coffee. Those who don’t drink strong coffee, or tend to use pre ground coffee anyway, should be quite happy with this new Cuisinart G&B. It has nice features. The burr grinder and grinder design are improvements over old Cuisinarts. With this model, I can fill the top of the machine with enough beans to last for days and the lid has a tight seal to keep the beans fresher. Also, the grinder on the old machines would get wet and the wet grinds would get strewn all over and had to be cleaned daily. With the new Cuisinart, the grinds end up in the filter where they belong and it’s easy to dump and rinse. The stainless carafe seems taller and nicer than what came with my old Cuisinart models. Plus, mine does not dribble or make any mess when I pour from it. Although each updated Cuisinart has less stainless steel and more plastic, this one looks great on the countertop. Also, I like that the controls are well labeled and easy to see. The settings are intuitive, so it’s easy to operate by pressing the on button, turning the grind dial to reflect the number of cups (4 minimum), pressing the strength button, turning the grinder off if desired and just pressing brew. This takes flat filters and includes a gold filter that comes in handy as backup if I run out. The machine takes charcoal water filters and is programmable. This is a really good machine for those who like average or medium strength coffee, but it falls short for me as I want really strong, full bodied coffee that comes from a finer grind. 3.5 stars. PS: To clarify, the water tank has measurements from 2 to 10 cups, though 4 is the lowest number on the grind control.

   So it can make a very good tasting cup of coffee but there are a lot of these out there. The most annoying thing is that the clock runs really fast so it’s completely useless to make a timed brew in the morning. It gains about an hour a week. As mentioned, the grinder is loud and can be heard while sleeping upstairs but its a grinder so it gets a pass. It has a really nice looking stainless pot that seems like it would keep the coffee warm, it doesn’t really. I dont know why in this age of vacuum sealed beverage cups they can’t make a decent one. Not only that but it makes a total mess when you try to pour it and it’s really hard to get all the coffee out. Pretty sure there must be a better option out there.

   Easy to use and clean, special-run white model that looks good in ubiquitous all-white kitchens. Did not find this model anywhere else. Hopper is sealed to keep beans reasonably fresh. Easily adjustable to yield desired strength of coffee. Only drawback is grind is set to coarse-medium grind degree that produces slightly under-extracted coffee. I believe this can be adjusted, but will require a call to Cuisinart support or possibly youtube. Will likely void warranty but at this price point, it seems of little consequence. The grinder isn’t the loudest I’ve heard but does terrify the cats at first. They will get used to it. It’s lovely to wake up to the sound of my coffee being prepared for me. Very happy with this purchase; would buy again in a heart beat.

   Update (new issue): So I’ve had this coffeemaker for less than two years now, and lately it’s been presenting a new issue – somehow, when beans run through the burr grinder, some of the grounds are somehow getting past the filter basket and ending up on top of the carafe, perfectly dry. It’s bizarre. I can’t figure it out. Dropping another star because it’s yet another hassle, having to dust off the top of carafe before messily pouring a cup (see below). This is a fantastic coffeemaker that’s held back from perfection by one glaring flaw (and a few minor ones). It’s a beautiful machine, though a bit large. Large enough that it’s probably best without a cabinet over it, so you can access the pour chamber without having to pull the machine out every day. (I have mine near the sink so I can fill with the faucet hose.) It grinds beans quite well, though control over the grind is limited to three “strength” settings. I’m trusting that it’s truly self-cleaning, because you can’t access the grinder mechanism at all. I had the old blade-style Grind & Brew, and that was a nightmare to keep clean. It’s pretty easy to program, though I haven’t had much success trying to get it to run on its own correctly when using ground coffee (it always wants to grind, even with Grind Off). Coffee temperature is good, and the stainless carafe keeps it hot for about an hour or so (and no burning). The big, nearly unforgivable flaw is that carafe though. It spills when pouring. And not just a little… a lot. Like, enough to whereI have to pour my cups over the sink, and have to wipe down the carafe before I put it back in the brewer. It’s a complete mess of a design, but the coffee’s good and it’s way easier to maintain than the old model, so four stars.

The model 850 lasted two weeks before the “Clean” light went on. Followed the instructions in the owners manual and called customer service and followed their additional guidance. They are refusing to refund my money and are sending another model 850. They say this one will ship in 15-20 days. DO NOT PURCHASE A Cuisinart!

    This review is for the 10-cup DGB-850 with Thermal Carafe (stainless steel). After using this coffee maker for over 10 weeks, we are quite happy with it overall (after learning a few lessons). Perhaps this is an updated version of the model, but we have not had any of the issues some reviews mention, like problems cleaning the grinder burrs. In fact, this version does not even have user-access to the grinder parts, based on the videos and descriptions from others with problems. This model advertises that the grinder assembly auto-rinses all the grinds from the grinder – there is no disassembly to get to the grinder itself, and it appears to work fine without access. All we do to clean it after each use is rinse out the permanent filter itself (or toss the paper filter), and wipe moisture from the holder and the housing above the coffee carafe platform. PROS: * Coffee tastes very good – grind/strength controls allows pretty good control over desired taste, by adjusting the amount of water used with each grind range (see my grind testing chart image, and table below). My wife likes coffee a bit weaker, so we use 7-8 cups of water with a 6-cup Grind, for instance, adjusting Strength as needed for the exact amount of water used. * With the thermal carafe, the heating plate below the carafe warms the stainless steel carafe as the coffee is brewed, so there is no need to pre-heat a cold carafe (which we had to do with our previous coffee maker). Works well – the heater is turned off automatically after the coffee is brewed, so it does not over-heat the coffee. The thermal carafe keeps the coffee pretty warm for an hour or two. * At least so far, we have not had any issues with cleaning the grinder burrs – easy clean-up. * We really like the ability to use either the permanent filter basket, or a paper filter. With a septic system, we cannot rinse grounds down the drain, and it is sometimes a pain to dump grounds outside in bad weather (so the paper filter is handy in heavy snow). We did not have this option with our old blade-grinder coffee maker. CONS (Lessons Learned): * Pouring water into the reservoir is a pain with the coffee maker under a cabinet. You need access to the back of the coffee maker to pour from a bit behind, since pouring from the front can let water spill out the overflow slots at the back of the reservoir. * As some reviews mention, pouring from the carafe can be a bit tricky with the lid on, if you are not careful. A full pot pours fine, but steeper angles of pour as the carafe gets emptier can make a mess. I remove the lid for pouring as the pot gets emptier. * To get just the right coffee strength for your personal tastes, it helps to understand exactly how the coffee maker adjusts the grind for the settings (Grind and Strength). I could not find this information in the manual or any on-line reference. See my “Strength Notes” below – between knowing what each combination does, and adjusting the amount of water for each setting, you can get pretty much just what you want, without wasting coffee. STRENGTH NOTES: At first, we found it a bit limiting to have fixed settings for only 4, 6, 8 & 10 cups of coffee. And I could not find any good description anywhere about exactly what the Grind control and the Strength control do – does one adjust the fineness of the grinding mechanism, and the other the amount of coffee beans ground (based on the amount of time the grinder runs)? If so, which controls which? All the manual really says is “The burr grinder will grind the correct amount of beans, and automatically adjust the coffee/water ratio for low cup settings.” So, I started experimenting with different settings to see what each does, based on the weight of the ground coffee put into the filter. I weighed the grounds after brewing each pot at different setting combinations, letting them drain quite a while first (wet grounds, but well drained). The chart in the image attached to this review (also shown in the table below) shows my results – not every setting available, but enough to figure out what is happening, I believe. From visual comparisons, I could not see any apparent differences in the coarseness of the grounds themselves with any combination, so I assume that the grinder does not change the coarseness/fineness of the grind itself, only the amount of beans ground, for both the strength and grind (# of cups) settings. But with the information in the chart, and by adjusting the amount of water you put in the reservoir for each brew, you can get pretty close to the strength you want. Ground Coffee Weights, Cuisinart DGB-850 Coffeemaker GRIND STRENGTH GRAMS (avg.) ============================= 4 Cups Extra Bold 75 6 Cups Regular 91 6 Cups Bold 102 6 Cups Extra Bold 120 8 Cups Bold 122 8 Cups Extra Bold 140 So, for example, we brew a slightly weaker-than-recommended pot by setting the Grind (# of cups) to 6 cups, adding either 7 or 8 cups of water to the reservoir, and setting the Strength as a kind of fine-tuning adjustment to get just the strength we want for that batch (my wife likes it a bit weaker, I like it a bit stronger – we alternate!). Hopefully this will help you fine-tune your perfect cup of coffee. Happy brewing!

    Disappointed that this coffee maker did not work out. First and second time- no problem. Third and fourth times- coffee leaked all over my counter. I made sure that I used it correctly and unfortunately it leaked. I read several reviews that reported the same, but I bought it anyway, hoping mine would be fine. Also, I’d like to add that it is bulky and the water dispenser area is behind the unit and hard to fill. I had to move it to the side because it did not fit under the cabinet Sad it didn’t work out.

    Often just flashes EMPTY and beeps. Yes there is a basket and water, and coffee in hopper. Takes a dozen or more tries to get it to work. Will probably return if I can’t find an answer. >>>> ok, here is what is going on – if you get impatient as there is a long delay when you press ‘BREW’ before anything happens and you press the BREW button more than once, it freaks out and gets into this Flashing Empty and Beeping. unplug for a minute, touch the brew button once and gently. I can deal with this now. My other observation is that it seems to grind a full basket of coffee regardless what strength you select. You can get two brews from one grind.

    I broke the carafe on my 5 year old Black & Decker Mill & Brew workhorse and decided it was time to replace it. My first choice was to purchase the same model but unfortunately it is out of stock. I spent hours searching for a white Grind & Brew Coffee Maker and chose the Cuisinart DGB-850W 10-Cup Grind & Brew. My first picture shows it next to my old model. The design in my opinion is attractively sophisticated. I really like the clean look. It narrow taking up less counter space. It is taller than most machines so I had to make sure I had enough clearance. When in use I have to pull it forward which is not a problem for me. The stainless steel thermal carafe is also a positive feature for me. I usually transfer my coffee to a separate carafe. This allows me to save counter space. The opening of the carafe is too small to fit my petite hand in to clean. I compromise with a baby bottle brush. The instructions state that the hopper holds up to 1/2 pound of coffee beans. I used less — only 1/4 pound of coffee beans. I followed the instructions carefully. The grounding process is very loud but I can live with that. The brewing time took a lot longer than my old B&D model –about 8 minutes. I can live with that too. Here is where I ran in difficulty. First time using it. I filled the reservoir careful not to exceed the water line. Poured my 1/4 pound of beans into the hopper. Set the cover properly. Set the grind settings and pushed the button to start the process. The grinder started and seemed to run a long time. Once completed the machine stopped. The brewing process would NOT start. Ultimately I reset the unit but this time turned off the grinder since this was already done. The brewing process was done in about 8 minutes. When I removed the carafe I noticed that grounds were on the top of the carafe, in the carafe housing, and around the hot plate. See the pictures. When I opened the ground basket housing I found grounds on top of the basket lid and on the door hinge housing. The picture of this was taken after I had cleaned some of the grinds away. This is very difficult to clean since the door cannot be removed. I had to use a butter knife wrapped with a thin layer of paper towel to remove all of the grounds. The clean up process took me 15-20 minutes. I really wanted this to work for me and was not ready to give up. I re-read the material to eliminate human error. I made sure the basket handle was facing the correct direction. Second attempt. The machine would not start the grind process. Instead it gave me an “Empty” error. I opened an closed every component. Yes the water tank was filled to the 10 Cup line. I checked for residue as well. I powered it off and then on after 5 minutes. The machine cycled from grind to brew! I has hopeful. Unfortunately the grounds were on the top of the carafe, the upper and back of carafe housing. When I opened the coffee basket housing, I found coffee grounds on top the basket cover and on the door hinge. Again it was mess to clean. The last 2 pictures were after I had already started clean up. I really wanted this machine to work for me. So I gave it a third try. It was another messy clean up. I admitted defeat and returned it. What a disappointment. A few suggestions to the manufacturer. Make it so the door hinge is removable for clean up. Re-evaluate the coffee basket lid. The grinds should transfer directly into the basket and nowhere else. I would really like to hear from others who had similar challenges and how they overcame them.

    I wanted to love it. In fact it is a very easy coffee machine to operate. My big big issue with it that it does not always brew hot hot coffee nor does the coffee stay hot. I hate that. I even went as far as upgrading from the glass container to help keep the coffee hot. After having it for 4 months, I found that it just does not brew hot enough. I can’t return it now because I waited to long so I will be trying to sell it on ebay or offer up. Point is, if you like your coffee really hot and need it to stay hot for hours, I would not recommend this machine for you.

    ***IMPORTANT UPDATE*** I didn’t realize it at the time but I was accidentally shipped a Cuisinart DGB-800, not the Cuisinart DGB-850. I was supposed to receive the DGB-850 for review. So, the below review is actually for the DGB-800 as you can see from the photos. I don’t know if the DGB-850 addresses any of the issues I shared below but I needed to clarify that I did not use and review the DGB-850. My original review follows. ——————————————————————- This is a nice coffee maker but it has a major fault. First, I’ll share the good. The machine will grind and brew a measured amount of whole beans or pre-ground coffee. It’s easy to operate and keep clean. It’s programmable and can brew at a pre-set time. It also looks good. The brewer can use either the included permanent filter or disposable paper filters. Now for the bad. The carafe is a good size but the lid isn’t attached. I have to remember to hold the lid on with my thumb while pouring or risk having it fall off. The increases the risk of possibly spilling hot coffee while pouring. The carafe lid is notable but not what I consider a major issue. My biggest problem with this machine is that brewed coffee simply isn’t nearly hot enough. If, like me, you like piping hot coffee that’s always a risk for mild tongue burn fresh out the pot, this isn’t the machine to own. I noticed the coffee seemed a bit cool after adding cream and other additives, so I tried it black immediately after brewing. After the machine beeped to indicate brewing was finished, I immediately poured a cup and took a sip. It was hot but not piping hot. I was able to take several healthy sips without any risk at all of burning my tongue. That’s a fine temperature after everything is already added but not right out the pot immediately after brewing. Adding refrigerated cream makes the coffee lukewarm at best. So, we packed this away and reverted back to using our existing coffee maker. I really wanted to like this machine but lukewarm coffee just isn’t my thing. I played around with every setting and tried both the included filter and paper filters. I tried both whole bean and pre-ground to see if it made a difference. I even tried using warm water instead of cold. Nothing gets coffee hot enough for me in this brewer. It’s a shame because this is otherwise a very nice coffee maker.

    If you are a coffee snob or just love freshly ground and brewed coffee, this is the one to buy. It uses a burr grinder to crush the beans keeping the beans flavor rather than razor grinding the crap out of the bean and it becomes flaky and loses flavor. That’s what the best coffee roasters and brewers use. It’s programmable and efficient. It will brew coffee before you are out of bed as long as you remember to program it. The metal carafe keeps the coffee warm for over 8 hours. If you’re like me, I like coffee all day and refuse to microwave my coffee to warm it up. Yuck. Two slight issues: 1. the fresh grounds get caught in the copper basket not allowing coffee to drip through (so switched to paper filters and it works great). It’s not even enough of an issue to lose a star. This coffee maker is that good. 2. It’s loud when grinding. But that’s the price I’m willing to pay for the freshest ground coffee at home. Again, I would not take a star for it. All Burr grinders are loud. To make this coffee maker absolutely perfect, I would add Bluetooth in case you forgot to program it or use with Alexa.

    I have been a Cuisinart coffee maker fan since I started drinking coffee. About 14 years ago, I received a Cuisinart Grind & Brew as a gift. It was such an upgrade for me, I loved it despite its quirks. The Grind n Brew line has seriously improved since it’s first model. I love that this has a sealed compartment to keep my beans fresh. It holds about 1/2 pound. The burr grinder grinds perfectly every time. This self measures the beans and coarseness based on the options you select. The grinder is internal and can’t be accessed. The machine cleans the grind out of the hopper after every use. The water reservoir is on the backside and can’t be removed. It’s not a deal breaker for me because I don’t use tap water in my machine. This can be programmed to make coffee when you want it. The insulated carafe is really the only downside. No matter how you pour it, it dribbles all over the place. Cuisinart could definitely improve their insulated carafes in all models.
