   We’ve had this coffeemaker since it came out. We bought directly from Zojurushi. The brew-strength dial works well to modulate fullness and flavor. The faux-“perc” lid seems to add body as well. But washing the strength dial is a nightmare because, while it can be washed in the sink, the mechanism’s two dials don’t come apart from each other, so you can never get coffee stains and occasionally grinds out of them. Other than that, we loved the machine until today, when–for the first time with any coffeemaker we’ve ever owned (as in, ever owned in our lives)–the finish on top of the hotplate started flaking off, leaving exposed bare metal where black paint used to be. Clearly, low-quality manufacturing/finishing, and now we’re suspect of the rest of the machine’s quality and durability. Beyond which, it’s incredible unsightly. We’ve owned Zojirushi rice cookers and water boilers for years, and this is the first time anything like this has happened. At this point, no matter how good the coffee is, we don’t recommend the machine. And once again, we’re on the hunt for a quality coffeemaker that doesn’t fail or break apart somehow in less than a year.

   I want a programmable 5-cup coffee machine, but the only one that supports programming is this large capacity one. The small capacity one only has a button switch and cannot brew coffee on time. I returned a coffee machine before because the water temperature was not high enough to activate the aroma of the coffee. I recommend this coffee machine. The boiling water temperature and the easy-to-clean top cover do not leave any residue.

   We use this product when we’re having guests to look at birds. And brews a true 10 cups of coffee when using 10 cups of water. Flavor was good, and the variable strength indicator on the lid is quite an asset.

   This dome shower head is a game changer. It has four lines that extend from the center. It looks like a plus sign +. Water comes out at one point along each line. It drips from the inner edge of the four lines if you’re on BOLD (as close to the center as you can get), and the outer edge of each line on CLASSIC (resulting in four drip dots along the far edge of each line away from the center). Zojirushi’s Zutto coffee machine has drip points in a similar setup (plus one that is dead center), but they can’t be adjusted. Some people rave about the flavor of the Zutto – I loved it – but they also complain that the coffee may be “over extracted” because if you make a full pot with max grounds, the grounds have a crater in the middle. I was hopeful this machine might be as flavorful as the Zutto, but adjustable so you can avoid a crater and spread out the shower head if you use more grounds. The machine sort of confirms this. The instructions say “BOLD is recommended for brewing 1-3 cups of coffee” (bold shrinks the shower head drip area to hit the less amount of grounds). My first two brews, each just 12 oz, have been wonderful! Similar flavor to the Zutto in my opinion. I’m very happy. Although I wish there was a drip dead center too. I’ve used #2 filters so far since it doesn’t come with #4, and they fit ok for now. Btw I opened the lid to try to measure temperature (which it says not to do) and I got like 180 to 195 ish, but that might be my thermometer. I wonder if by the time the 200F water hits the dome, then when it drips down it’s cooled by a few degrees. I don’t subscribe to the 200 degree requirement anyway. I’ve heard world championship coffee is sometimes brewed at like 170. I think this coffee is good because it’s brewed slow and the water hits the beans. I think the cheaper “classic” version of this machine is pretty much a wonderful option and it has the main adjustment for smaller 1-3 cup brews (adjusting the shower head to BOLD) in my opinion. One thing I like about the programmable version is when your coffee is finished, instead of showing the current time, the screen starts at 0 and shows the time elapsed since brewing. Btw time is always military time – I don’t think you can change that according to the manual. And the “brew” button has like a braille bump to it and takes a little extra push to register, so I hope that button’s reliable.

   Update: broke after a few months, just stopped sucking up water to brew coffee. Overall I like this product. I’ve made coffee in the bold, medium in classic options and it definitely tasted different per setting. There are a few design flaws with the coffee pot itself. First the lid either fully detaches or fully attaches, you cannot lifted open with your thumb as you pour like you would with a normal coffee pot (see imagine). The coffee pot also has a very curved lip so you can never pour out all the coffee.

   I’m a huge fan of Zojirushi products. I own one of their bread makers, two rice makers and two water heaters. Their products have always been better than any competition, so when our last coffee maker suddenly stopped working after less than 3 years of ownership (thanks Braun) I decided to get a Zojirushi instead. We received this on 5/12/2023 and began using it the next day and were so happy – the coffee taste was impeccable, the functions were easy to use too – which meant we woke up to glorious coffee reliably every morning. Then this morning happened (7/11/2023): We woke up to hot coffee all over our cabinets, it had leaked into our bread drawer and towel drawer and we had to throw out all of our bread and wash all of our towels, take apart the drawers, wash them out, air them out to dry in the garage because they were entirely soaked through. Bewildered, I looked for the cause: I took the carafe and looked at it, ran water through it and immediately noticed water dripping out of the carafe – I was able to identify a VERY tiny fracture in the glass carafe – which is what caused this disaster (see attached picture). I’ve had glass coffee pots for over 20 years – never has this happened. We don’t abuse our glass carafes; we’re very careful because we’re scared of this type of thing happening. The worst part? Zojirushi doesn’t have replacement carafes for this product, so it renders our purchase useless after less than 60 days of use – meaning we need to purchase yet ANOTHER coffee maker. I’m laying blame at the manufacturer here for this – obviously the glass isn’t as durable as it should be for a consumer product designed for everyday use. They likely went cheap and used lightweight glass to keep weight & manufacturing costs down. Not impressed Zojirushi. So 140$+ for less than 60 days of use? No thanks. It’s a major slap in the face to a loyal Zojirsuhi brand customer.

   I have other same brand products and I loved them all! This coffee maker is extremely good at making coffee. The coffee is rich and tasty, can’t find any fault. Very easy to fill the water and to clean. Even though it’s not considered small, it’s still a great fit for your kitchen or your office. The warmer will keep the coffee fresh and warm. Very good choice of coffee maker!
