   Update. I have now had this coffee brewer for almost 7 years and it is awesome. We drink a lot of coffee in my home, maybe 2-3 pots a day (my wife and I both take a thermos to work). I haven’t had to replace any parts on this brewer. It’s very heavy duty. I highly recommend this brewer if you drink a lot of coffee and you don’t want to wait 20 minutes for a pot to brew. Also, if you can’t stand the taste of plastic, this is a great option because nearly every part is made of metal. All the parts are replaceable so it should last forever. ————————————————— Original review October 2018. I was gifted this coffee brewer which was purchased from a local restaurant supplies store. Other than the plastic funnel, the brewer seems high quality and heavy duty. I replaced the plastic funnel with a stainless steel one…which wasn’t really necessary but a nice upgrade none the less. The brewer is larger than the typical consumer-grade coffee brewer, but still small enough to tuck underneath my cabinets. If you keep it plugged in all the time, it keeps the tank of water hot and therefore uses electricity even when not brewing. However, because it always has a hot tank of water ready to go, it brews a pot of coffee wicked fast. Overall…so far so good.

   I bought this model 10-2014 and still use it daily. I updated to a Bunn thermal carafe from glass and installed a Kasa smart plug on the power cord. I set the smart plug to turn on at 05:00 and off at 09:00. Sometime in that window I make a pot of coffee into the thermal carafe and it says HOT all day. Overall, we are still extremely happy with the unit. We used to buy a new consumer grade plastic coffee maker annually. They would break or melt and it just was not worth trying to fix. The only caveat is it is not easy to clean or descale. I only knock it one star because I love it, but please read my explanation. I use a product specifically for cleaning stainless. It is hard to remove kitchen grease spots and finger prints without scratching the stainless. I understood all this beforehand and was prepared to cope. Descaling was a different story. I use the included cleaning spring weekly as outlined in the instruction manual. It goes really fast; not a problem. We have fairly hard well water and it takes its toll on everything. I boil the spray head in vinegar to loosen up deposits occasionally. It just unscrews from the unit. I knock off the big stuff with a toothpick and make sure it stays clean. As the unit ages, the scale builds up in the internal tank. This causes the unit to boil the water in the internal tank when the thermostat cycles the heater. When the unit gets a little loud, I just install an empty funnel and cycle a gallon or 2 of vinegar through the warmed up unit into a glass carafe. You have to then cycle an absolute butt load of water through the unit before your next coffee brewing session. I wonder if Bunn offers a machine to clean the internal tank; like heater technicians use to descale boilers. It could be something that would replace the fill basin inlet fitting on the tank lid and connect to where the spray head threads onto. In 08-2022 the brewing cycle was getting long, about 15 minutes. I completely disassembled the unit and thoroughly cleaned the entire machine, inside and out. I found the lime scale had restricted the opening in the tank lid from the basin. This caused the poured water to stay in the basin and increase my brew time. After cleaning the entire unit it is back to working great again!! Thank you Mr. Bunn for a great cup of coffee every morning…

   After a lengthy search, I finally replaced my fragile and ailing, fancy Technivorm Moccamaster CD coffee maker with a Bunn VP17. On the plus side, this thing is built like a tank and appears to be ready for the long haul. And, since I’ve replaced the stock 180 Deg. F max thermostat with a Bunn Tea thermostat (Bunn p/n 03024.0005) capable of raising the output temperature to as high as 206 Deg. F max, the coffee I get outa this thing is top-notch, water at the output spray head measures 195 deg. (same as the Moccamaster), and all grounds are fully saturated. It produces an honest 12 cups of coffee (considerably more than the European-volume Moccamaster) in about three minutes, is much easier to clean up, and spare parts can be obtained way quicker and cheaper, due to this thing’s commercial pedigree. I’m somewhat klutzy and know that I’ll eventually have to buy a new glass carafe – which are really cheap to replace here on coffeemakers.us.com. On the minus side, it’s big and the looks are somewhat “diner-industrial.” I posted a picture of my Bunn VP17 on this site, so you can see what I mean – it BARELY fits under my kitchen cabinets. My wife doesn’t really care for it, but I love it. This unit makes a serious coffee statement. In addition, the rectangular water addition door on the top of the unit drips a small amount of water onto the top of the unit every time you open it, requiring a minor wipe-up with a paper towel. Apparently, condensation builds up on the bottom side of the door and runs off when opened. I wish Bunn would have figured our a better answer in the design phase of their product line (this is a concern with users of other Bunn products as well). I’ve discovered that, if I put a full 64 oz. of water into the top of the VP17, I’ve got to use a minimum of 85 Grams of medium grind (a setting of 4.5 on my KitchenAid Pro Line Grinder) coffee to get good results. Less coffee in results in watery coffee out. I’ve read on the web that a “Connoisseur’s Brewing Ratio” requires as much as 115 grams of coffee for the same amount of water, but I haven’t gotten there yet. My favorite local coffee shop uses 8 oz coffee per gallon of water, which translates into approximately 113 grams per 64 oz – which I will work my way up to. They also advise to use a finer grind for milder roasts. We’ll see about that too. If you’re going to get one of these, be sure to order a Bunn 12-cup glass carafe or two, and search around for the Bunn 20216.0000 Stainless Steel SplashGuard Funnel to go with it. I wanted to skip the whole plastic adventure (taste and health concerns), so I scrapped the original plastic funnel. I’m sure you can tell, but I’ll say it anyways: I really like this coffee maker and have used it every day since I got it two weeks ago. For personal, family or entertaining use, this thing cannot be beat!

   After spending a $100 a pop for residential Bunn coffee pots I figured I’d step up to commercial grade. The residential grade pots seemed to only last a couple of years before they started to leak. Well after going through 3 residential pots I could’ve bought one of these. The construction is great, and I doubt this will leak any time soon plus I can replace any components that may go out. The only complaint I have is it doesn’t come with the decanter; they can supply a pitcher but not a pot? Make sure you have adequate room before you buy because it’s higher than your regular coffee maker.

    Update 5/2020: still love it! We run filtered water through it and haven’t had to clean it in almost 5 years. If the pot sits on the burner for a long time, the coffee will scorch. Solved that problem by putting a folded piece of foil under the pot. Don’t fold too many times, and leave the pot directly on the burner for a while before inserting the foil, otherwise the coffee might not achieve piping-hot status. Invest in the stainless filter basket for the best results. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT! Yes, it’s big. Yes, it takes up a lot of counter space. Yes, it delivers piping hot, delicious coffee – and keeps it piping hot – in just a few minutes. It’s taken a bit of reconditioning – I can’t start the brew cycle without the pot in place (don’t try it unless you want to clean up a big mess) like I could with my old drip coffee maker. Another error was trying to get a cup of hot water for tea without using the filter basket (I haven’t upgraded to the stainless basket, so my plastic basket is coffee flavored). It’s possible, but I had to hold the cup right beneath the hot water spray, otherwise its “fan” pattern overshoots the top of the cup and, yep, another big mess. Can’t really add much that hasn’t already been said. If you have room for it, go for it.

    Got this as a home coffee maker and couldn’t be happier. Perfect coffee extremely fast, just like ordering coffee at the dinner. Also got the metal funnel and striped all the warning labeles, and remeved and reatached the serial number sticker to the back side of the front plate after removing the screws, to give it a less restaurant look. Think I’ll probably get the stainless insulated carafe next to finish it off.

    We wanted a restaurant quality coffee maker that did not require plumbing. We found it and couldn’t be happier. You basically fill the machine with two full pots of water that get heated as hot as you need it. On the next full pot pour, one pot of hot water is pushed to the coffee grounds chamber. So you can make two pots fairly quickly. It takes about 20 minutes to heat subsequent full pot pours. On our first pot with pre-grounded Dunkin beans, we just happen to hit Dunkin that day before the machine arrived. See picture – we couldn’t tell the difference in look. We use a bit of sugar and creamer. The taste was almost exactly the same. We went ahead and bought a burr grinder. The coffee taste just like the Dunkin stores. Now we can have our favorite coffee every morning without the 45 minute drive in each direction. This is perfect for us. Some things to consider. There is no brew button or ready button. The next pot starts when you put the next full pot of water in. The machine keeps the coffee in the pipeline hot by turning on periodically to reheat. The machine gets brewing noise similar to Keurig machine makes. If you are a light sleeper with a bed next to the machine, you probably want to unplug (there is no on/off switch) the machine at night or when not in use. It does take 20 minutes to heat the water from a cold start. If you add water too soon, the water going through the coffee grinds may not be hot enough. None of this affects us as our bedrooms are away from the kitchen and we like the machine always ready. The water in your home pipes are full of chemicals and minerals like calcium. These are not good for the machine. The pipelines can get very hot and cause deposit and build-up inside the lines. Reading other user feedback, you should consider using filter water from any reverse osmosis sink line you have, refrigerator filtered water or bottled water. Or frequently (once a week to month) purge your lines with vinegar and water. The burner also does not automatically turn off. So you have to remember to turn it off when you are done. Small inconvenience for perfect coffee without breaking the bank.

    Bought this because the Mr. Coffee finally broke after 8 years of usage, yet to find out after taking it apart that its water container and heating part were made of aluminum. Too late. We are about one week into using this Bunn machine. Very satisfied with the quality and convenience it provides. However, the water came out from the machine was only at 180 F right after it finished heating. Read another review mentioning that the thermostat probe may need to be adjusted to not touching any surface inside the water tank so that it can detect the temperature correctly. I took the machine apart, made sure the thermostat dial was at the max position. Then I opened up the top and took away the fill basin, then took out the thermo probe and adjusted it, then put it back in. Right after this was done, the water reaches to 200 F when it finished heating, which was the temperature stated in the user manual. This is the same temperature that I measured in the water of an electric kettle as soon as it stops heating. The temperature measure in the draining water was 190 F, which is reasonable as the water travels through the long pipe into the funnel before draining out. BTW, taking this machine apart is so easy. And I can proof that all parts are stainless steel other than the silicon seal holding the thermo probe, but it doesn’t touches the water. We use this machine not only for coffee, but it also serves as a hot water source whenever we need it. I bought an orange metal funnel and a black metal funnel, so I can use the black one for coffee and the orange one for draining hot water. It’s so convenient to always have hot water in a second.

    This is professional brewing equipment for not much more than top of the line home equipment. Without top mounted warmer and several inches shorter than the VPR models it fits under wall cabinets. A huge plus for us. Bunn is used through the coffee business and produces superior coffee. To save on electricity I suggest putting on a timer. In our case, we have it come on at 5:30 am and off at 10am.

    After my Bunn NHS stopped heating I decided to go for a commercial model after seeing yt video of what was left of someones home using a consumer model. The VP-17 brews coffee fast and super hot just how we like it. I went all in and ordered a stainless steel basket to completely rid the unit of plastic touching my coffee. in the box you will find a cleaning spring, basket, filters, and the VP-17. Also if you remove the panel behind the burner you will find a dial for the hot water tank that is turned down for “high altitude” brewing so I cranked it to full. I also got a glass decanter for coffee and a plastic one for hot water for tea. All in all I absolutely love this coffee maker as all parts are replaceable. As another buyer stated this unit is built to last and be repaired if needed not end up a throw away like all of the chinesium plastic consumer units out there that could burn your house down. Pros brews extremely fast simple cleaning and maintenance tank reservoir temperature control burner keeps coffee extremely hot fits under my cabinets but beware that this unit will make any near surfaces warm to the touch so keep an eye on it until you are comfortable. Cons no tank heater power switch but I am resolving that with a high draw smart switch so I can turn the machine off remotely if needed. no decanters which is to be expected for a commercial grade unit.

    I did a lot of checking and I have own alot of coffeemakers so I consider myself very knowledgeable with coffeemakers and reliability and if they get the coffee hot enough. When I owned a machine shop I always provided employees with coffee made with Bunn coffeemakers and when I closed my shop I sold my equipment including my Bunns bad mistake. I have owned Mr.Coffee which make an average cup but most units fail within two years, owned several Bunn coffeemakers you can buy a the department store such as Walmart and they seem to only last a year and my son has a Saeco Automatic which makes great hot coffee which he has never had a problem with but many people have. So I went with the Bunn VP17-1SS and than I purchased from The WEBstaurant Store the Zojirushi 1.9 Liter Deluxe Thermal Carafe – Black Lid (Bunn 36029.0001) which will fit underneath this unit and will the coffee will drip into the Carafe with no problem (just make sure when you use KEEP THE WARMING BURNER OFF)! Bunn makes a Commercial BUNN VPR-TC 12-Cup Pourover Thermal Carafe Coffee Brewer sold at coffeemakers.us.com for $288 plus you need to buy the carafe which is another $70. Do not understand why you pay more for a machine that is identical except it has no warming plate, but the VP17 and just switch the plate off. This unit beats those K-cups hands down, have you ever priced a single serving k-cup? You can make a perfect pot of coffee with this machine for the same coast as a k-cup. I find my best value for a pot of coffee comes when I purchase Costco 100% Colombian Dark Roast Fine Grind and I measure out 1.75 ounces or 50 grams. On the weekends will splurge and used fresh roasted beans from a nearby roaster and I will grind them fine and use the same weight. Starbuck coffee I find you need to grind medium or better yet have them grind it but you need to use around 3-3.5 ounces. In the evening I drain any remaining still hot coffee from my thermal and using the Bunn fill it water hot water, in the morning I take the hot water pour it into our coffee cups to warm them up, drain the thermal carafe, and make a fresh pot using the above method. Usually all can be done in less than 5 minutes. But believe me you can then take those hot mugs add cold cream than your freshly made coffee and your coffee will be hotter and better than any restaurant. Just think for the price of one cup of coffee at any restaurant you made a big 12 cup of coffee for almost half the price. If you decide to use Glass carafes and you have a Gordon Food Service near you they sell commercial coffee carafe for the lowest price.

    As soon as this beauty arrived Iimmediately installed the older thermostat set for 206F vs original set at 202F. Then, discovering PIDs, installed a PID controller to more precisely set tank temperature to what ever I wanted, added a switch to be able to use either thermostats( 206F kicked off at 205.4F) and then a temperature gauge installed as close to brew head as possible. I have never had better coffee than what I”m brewing with this machine. Recently learned about the 4:6 pour-over method and am trying to do this with timing the pour into the Bunn. Has made a difference, organic beans and a quality grinder all add up to wonderful coffee. It would be nice if Bunn where to isolate the brew head from all the metal around it as they did with the brew tube going to the SS tank that is isolated with a silicone washer. I think they got that set up bassacwards…To my way of thinking, they should have welded it to the tank and the other end at the brew head be isolated with the silicone washer, thus keeping the brew temperature as high as possible. Welding it to the brew head has the whole SS top of that area acting as a heat sink, sucking temperature out of the water. Still a beautifully simple machine that brews wonderful coffee. Well worth my investment in the VP17 and my additions. Photo shows the PID with the main heating coil turned off. The exterior wrap around heating unit keeps tank really warm, I only use the in tank heating element to get water up to brewing temperature which only takes a few minutes. If you ever try this yourself remember, the tank can heat (with the PID) to 211(no need to go to boiling at 212f) so regular wiring won’t work in hi heat environment.

    Attention hardcore coffee drinkers: start with this machine, then experiment with beans and grinding. Once you get that dialed-in, this maker becomes your best friend (for us, that’s 72 grams of Brazilian — ground medium). This Bunn commercial coffee maker has remained an amazing purchase. We aren’t precious snobs (maybe a little) but boy are we particular about our morning coffee being consistent. We also drink lattes in the afternoon (using a different machine, obviously), and when I look back at all of the espresso makers and grinders we’ve gone through (three KitchenAids, some Brevilles, etc.) the Bunn becomes an absolute bargain. Also, once you get spoiled by the instant brew time using any other type of coffee maker (and there are some great ones out there) feels like an eternity. ———————— Previous review: I am on my 6th Bunn (love the results, but the consumer models never last more than a year for us). This machine is as good as they say, but there are a few things you must know before buying this monster: It DOES NOT come with the carafe (coffee pot). Be sure and order one. It does come with a water pitcher. It DOES get quite hot on the exterior for long periods of time. I raised a cabinet just to make room for this and I wish I had given it more than 1″ of clearance. It DOES emit a fairly strong odor. This is from the heating element inside the unit. It’s sort of a plastic-y “something is burning smell”. It DOES take up a ton of room. Allow AT LEAST 18″ of clearance and know that it needs 18″ of countertop depth. Again, it stays pretty hot, so it wouldn’t be a good idea to wedge it into a space where it can’t breathe. Knowing the outrageous size of this commercial unit, we surmised that many people get the box delivered, open it up, realize it’s too much for them, and send t back unused. So we chose an coffeemakers.us.com Warehouse Deal (used). The unit we received was indeed unused and we saved a significant amount of money.

    I bought this thing because it has the least amount of plastic touching the coffee possible. Six months in, it’s been fantastic. USING A STEEL FUNNEL If you want to go plastic free, you’re going to have to use a steel funnel. There is a steel funnel made for this exact machine. If you go that route you’ll also need to get the tip kit, which is usually sold separately. Per the parts catalog for this model you need: 20216.0000 FUNNEL 01031.0000 TIP KIT Without the tip kit the coffee goes through the funnel too fast. The tip kit restores the proper flow. The only reason I can assume the tip kit is not included is that different model coffee makers must flow differently. I’ve included a few screen grabs of the catalog so you can see for yourself. Also, the steel funnel is way easy to clean, since the grate the coffee sits on is removable. GRIND If you buy pre ground coffee, this pot will make acceptable pots of coffee. What it really likes is a MEDIUM-FINE grind. The finer the grind, the quicker the coffee extracts. In the case of this coffee pot, it takes 2:45 seconds for all the water to run from the tank to the funnel. This means that medium or course grinds are not going to extract all the way, which can leave the coffee with a slightly sour or low flavor taste. VERDICT This is the best drip coffee maker I’ve ever used in terms of both taste and speed. Newbies be warned, you have about 1 second from when you finish pouring to when it starts coming out the funnel. Also, it takes up a ton of counter space. My wife thinks it’s ugly, but so am I and she got used to me. Highly recommended!
