   Our last Chemex broke. So we got a new one. A bigger one, because who doesn’t always want to make more coffee? Well, somewhere in the intervening years, Chemex redesigned their spouts to make them more square. And that subtle difference means that every single time I brew coffee, the filter gets trapped inside the spout and forms a seal (see photo.) No bueno, Chemex.

   I have been using a classic Chemex coffee maker to brew coffee for over 25 years. During that 25 years, I’ve had to replace the coffee maker once after it broke. Why am I loyalty question I think the key is the paper filter which absorbs the harsh oils that can be present in coffee, leaving behind the rich, deep, full flavor of the coffee. You will never have a smoother cup of coffee than with the Chemex. Intensity without bitterness.

   It took me a long time to finally find a coffee maker that didn’t have any plastic parts and one that brewed a rich, flavorful cup of coffee. I used to use a Cuisinart thermal coffee maker but I’d been reading so many articles about heating food in plastic containers and utensils that I began to wonder how safe having almost boiling water sitting in a coffee filter that was made of plastic while brewing could be. I sent out lots of emails to companies that made electric drip coffee machines trying to find one made of stainless steel but most were stainless only on the outside and many of those were lined with plastic. I finally found a percolating pot Presto 02811 12-Cup Stainless Steel Coffeemaker that was all stainless and had a really nice retro look to it, but the coffee just didn’t taste very good, probably because it was boiled. We have a small french press coffee maker, but I wanted to be able to make a big pot and drink it over an hour or two and with the coffee grounds sitting in the bottom, the first cups were great, but the later ones, not so much. I finally came across this Chemex Coffee Maker that is all glass except for the trim. It seemed a little simplistic but I’d run out of options, so I ordered it. When I saw that smiling coffeemakers.us.com package I could hardly wait to open it and try the pot. I’d ordered some filters as well, but they hadn’t arrived yet so I used some flat bottom filters that I had lying around. It took a long time for the coffee to drip through, like about 10 minutes, because the filter bunched up on the bottom, in the neck of the coffee maker and made it drip very slowly. But the coffee was nothing short of amazing! No off flavors from a plastic filter basket or built up residue from a pot that was difficult to clean. The coffee tasted incredibly fresh and clean. And I love the way this pot looks on my counter. It reminds me of something out of the 70’s, living in Berkeley. Later that day I found some Melitta cone shaped filters at the grocery store which I decided to use until the Chemex Unbleached Square Coffee Filter arrived. They worked better and it was somewhat faster, but the best filters were the Chemex square ones. The process went much faster and the nice thing is that the filters stick out well past the top so it’s easy to pull them out when you’re finished and discard the grounds. It’s strange, the Chemex filters feel thicker, but the coffee flows through them more quickly. It’s definitely worth it to get the right ones. This coffee maker says it’s 10 cups but coffee makers seem to measure cups differently than I do. If I fill it to the bottom of the wood trim, that’s 6 8-ounce cups. I use a big coffee mug that holds something like 10 ounces. I love that this coffee maker is so easy to clean. I have a rounded brush that works perfectly that I bought at Wal Mart. I also like that the only thing the hot water and coffee touches is glass. It takes a little longer to make coffee than just dumping water into an electric coffee maker and flipping the switch, maybe 5 to 10 minutes with the new filters, but for the flavor of the coffee it’s so worth the extra time. I use Hamilton Beach 40898 Cool-Touch Cordless 8 Cup Electric Kettle to heat my water and since the pot holds more than the electric kettle (It was originally purchased for tea.) I have to heat about 1-1/2 of the electric kettle pots. I purchased this top for the pot: Chemex Glass Coffeemaker Lid which helps a bit in keeping the coffee hot and looks nice. The only drawback for me is that the coffee doesn’t stay hot like in a thermal coffee maker, and when I get down to the third or forth cup I have to put it in the microwave for 30 seconds or so. I’m looking now at some type of cover for the pot to keep it warm. I posted one tongue-in-check solution under the product photos. See what you think. For me, this coffee maker is entirely worth the extra trouble because the coffee tastes so incredibly good. I wish I had discovered it sooner.

   Déjà c’est un très bel objet, j’aurais du prendre le filtre réutilisable dès cet achat car au final je m’en sers presque tous les jours même si ça prend plus de temps pour faire du cafe. Le café est très bon, aucun dépôt.

    I was tired of cleaning coffee machines and the lingering vinegar smell. When my second Keurig gave up on brewing, I spent weeks looking for a replacement. I went down many Reddit threads and I landed on this and the French press. I had been making my coffee “like the cowboys did” and was enjoying my strong brew. I’ll be honest, I don’t see the fuss about “too weak” “too oily” “not oily enough”. The vessel allows for many types of coffee results depending on the filters used. Keep in mind that hemp or cotton ones will slow down the flow but strip oils from the coffee and that there are slow brew permanent filters to add if the issue is a fast drip time or wasting paper. I have yet to have a “light” brew and we love each cup I do make. Anyway, it’s sturdy and feels like it’ll last a while with proper care. The best part is the clean up – quick and easy.

We broke my S.O.’s that he’s used for years, so we needed a quick replacement because coffee withdrawal is a real thing. So we ordered the 10 Cup classic. This is what we received. Boxes both intact, no damage to either box. The Chemex itself was just the top half, broken, with no bottom to it. But there was no broken glass in the box. So someone went out of their way to take out the broken glass, but proceed to send out half a broken item? I’m obviously returning, and I would err to the side of caution when ordering from this seller. But still get a Chemex, because they’re amazing. UPDATE: I took the risk of ordering another from this seller because 1-day shipping when you’re a caffeine addict is too sweet of a deal. I’m glad I did, this time the Chemex was sent to us in perfect condition, no broken glass, not even a scratch. Again, Chemex is amazing and takes your coffee game to ANOTHER LEVEL.

    Chemex has changed the manufacturing. I broke my original and needed a replacement. It arrived and was 30% lighter and wooden collar fit poorly. In corresponding with Chemex, the advised they have been shifting to carafes being made in Germany via a new process that uses higher pressure allowing a thinner (therefore lighter) glass that is stronger. Hopefully I won’t test if it is really stronger and there is no way of knowing the validity of their claim. The iconic 2 piece collar doesn’t this slightly different shape as well. In fact, it doesn’t even touch the glass all the way around. My guess is that they have a stock of collars from the original carafe and are using them while carafes are coming from two sources. Unfortunately, that leaves the Germany-made carafes feeling cheap while the price point is anything but. I did have it replaced once as defective and the collar on the replacement is marginally better. I am seriously considering returning it and changing to a different manufacturer where the fit & finish are more appropriately aligned to price point. I am disappointed that a company renown for its form and function has failed to maintain its core values.

    The product makes coffee well enough but that credit goes to the filters, my coffee itself and my method of pour over.. but the quality of this craft is very poor. They sent me one that had a dirty box with dust and dirt inside the box as well. The glass is wavy with flaws and not very thick (feels like it will break easily. The bamboo heat shield is cheap and has chips in it.. they even tried to dremel and grind a crack that was in the bamboo instead of just tossing it and putting on a new one.. for a reputable company you can tell they are penny pinchers. Which is ridiculous for a product they sell for 50 bucks but clearly costs them little to nothing to produce… Now I have to return the product to get a replacement and be weeks without coffee. Pretty ridiculous process. Sometimes online purchases can be too tedious. If I had bought this from a local store I’d already have a replacement and be enjoying coffee every day. Should’ve gone with the cheaper bodum or cosori.. or even the hario v60. All much cheaper and I imagine comparable in quality. Other than that the vessel itself is practically pointless. Doesn’t even keep coffee hot unless you preheat it with scolding hot water
