The Technivorm Moccamaster is an excellent coffee maker. I makes fantastic coffee (probably close to the best possible for a simple drip style unit). HOWEVER... the price! How does one justify $300+ when there are so many cheaper options? If one of the following describes you, steer away from this coffee maker: you ... Just want something to make your Folgers, Want something fancy (expensive) to keep up with the Joneses, Want cutting edge "technology," Want lots of "features," Don't take good care of your possessions, Don't keep things for many years, Want the best "deal" (not necessarily "value" which is more complicated) possible, Make coffee only occasionally (not every week), or of course Want a machine that will make hot chocolate, chai anything, cappuccino, or anything other than straight up high quality drip coffee. This does one thing, simply. It is very well made, in Europe, by well paid employees, and designed to last a lifetime if properly maintained. If it breaks, it is designed to be able to be FIXED with widely available parts unlike nearly every Chinese made small appliance on the market today. These qualities make for a great product but at a relatively high price. Now that we have that out of the way, here is my review of this product after a half year of use: I like my coffee flavorful and strong. I typically make one pot every couple of days, saving the unused coffee in the fridge to be used for iced coffee later. I believe it is advisable to make exactly one full pot at a time for best results. One pot is about 48oz or 6c. It says 10 cups on the water reservoir, so they must think each "cup" (of coffee) is about 4.8oz. There is also what appears to be liter measures, but I question the accuracy there. You certainly can put in less water and try to make a partial pot, but I have reservations about the quality of the results. At any rate, you get about 6c. of coffee for a pot. I'm always amazed and impressed how fast and quiet it works. Granted, my comparison is to my old, cheap, $12.99 coffee maker that gurgled and carried on for what seemed like forever. I love the Moccamaster for it's quiet, smooth operation. Cleanup for me is to simply dispense with the #4 cone style filter and spent grounds (compostable), rinse the detachable parts, of which there are several, and leave to air dry. Not the easiest cleanup, but not bad at all. There are two switches only; both of which operate with a silky smoothness and a satisfyingly weighty metallic "click." Flip the left switch to start brewing. The light on the switch will turn on signaling power. If you don't flip it back (off), it will automatically do so in 90 minutes. The right switch controls the temperature of the heating plate (not the water heating element which always heats the water to optimal brewing temperature). Flip the switch one way for hotter coffee, the other way for somewhat less hot coffee. The idea here is that some like HOT coffee, but quality will be effected with time. The less hot setting will allow the coffee to stay fresh for the entire 90 minutes, if desired. I think the less hot setting is plenty hot, so I keep it there. The only other adjustable component is the brew basket. It can be set to "open," "closed," or "half way." I usually just leave it open. If you close it for some reason, DON'T forget to open it before the next brew. Disaster!! (Trust me you will not make that mistake twice.) I'm not sure what the purpose of a user adjustable brew basket is (as opposed to one that automatically shuts off the flow when the carafe is removed). Supposedly the half way setting can be used when brewing a half pot. Also, closing it off at the beginning of brewing can allow the coffee to "bloom" briefly before opening it up for the remainder of the brew. One positive consequence of not having the automatic shut off is that the carafe doesn't have to physically contact the brew basket which provides a cleaner look and no moving parts to keep clean. (Just don't forget to slide it to "open" before brewing!) The construction is quite good. The main structure is heavy gauge metal, beautifully painted. Mine is matte black which hides the smudges and finger prints nicely. Other finishes, especially shiny ones, might take more care to look good. It says the heating elements are copper which will stay corrosion free as opposed to cheaper, failure prone aluminum elements in nearly all other coffee makers. The hot plate on which the carafe sits appears to be ceramic, looks very nice and is easy to wipe clean. The plastic parts are well made, but somewhat flimsy; definitely not commercial grade. If one is hard on one's appliances, I could imagine breaking or cracking the brew basket, brew basket holder, water reservoir lid, or carafe lid. Of course all of these parts can be replaced if needed. The water reservoir itself is very sturdy (acrylic?). I wish the plastic end caps were metal, or at least better looking plastic. The Moccamaster's style would be perfect in a modern, minimalist kitchen; but may not be everyone's cup of tea. (er, you know what I mean) I love the design because it looks like no other coffee maker, serious but not fancy. They sell colors and finishes that could easily make this coffee maker the showpiece of a kitchen, if desired. (However, this particular model only is available in stainless or black.) Not too many complaints with this unit, but nothing is perfect. The flimsy plastics could feel and look more rugged, especially the end caps. Operation is a little bit of a process (removing and replacing the lid on the water reservoir, removing and replacing to lid on the brew basket, etc.). I'm fine with it, but some might feel it is a little tedious. Finally, my biggest problem is with the carafe. I do love it's overall look and feel, but the handle is problematic. The plastic handle is attached to a metal band that holds it to the glass. The metal band is not tight enough to keep the handle from making the whole thing feel flimsy, especially when lifting and pouring a full pot. My old cheap coffee maker had a larger plastic handle piece that attached to the glass at two spots making it feed sturdy when pouring. However it didn't look sleek like the Moccamaster's carafe. Are looks more important than feel? Don't know, but I wish I could have both. The other issue with the carafe is it's inability to pour without dripping or even spilling slightly. I am a careful pourer, but I can't get a clean pour for the life of me. Oh well, I always have a tea towel handy when pouring myself a cup to keep things tidy. In conclusion, the Technoverm Moccamaster is one of my favorite possessions, but it is not made for the masses. This somewhat elitist appliance may, simultaneously make you feel proud and guilty. But, if you truly love good, simply made coffee, as I do (and have deepish pockets); the pride and guilt will pass, and you will be left with a coffee experience you can savor for a lifetime.
Only lasted 6 months. Cracked around top of pot. Company was wonderful to work with and replaced item.
I got this because I love Americano coffee (let's face it, I just love coffee). Anyway, the pictures don't quite show how nice this really is. It comes packaged very well, and the major pieces are glass, including the filter. It comes with a few filters and a coffee scoop that has a 'snap' attachment that you can use to seal coffee afterward and keep track of the scoop at the same time. It's very easy to use and the coffee is wonderful. Highly recommended for coffee drinkers out there!
Wonderful wonderful coffee maker! It actually TASTES better! The coffee stays warm without tasting burnt. And I love the top rack dishwasher ability
Received this as a gift and I love it. Buy paper filters because mine sat on the counter not being used for almost a year because my reusable metal filter got clogged up after just a few cups and I couldn't get it to work. I finally got the paper and now I make 90% of my coffee at home. It's perfect. The only coffee that can compete is when my favorite barista makes me the same thing for $5. Buy some good coffee for this. Skip past the Starbucks and store bought and find someone who roasts it fresh every week. Makes all the difference. Also, I kind wish I had the one with a glass handle because this is kind of awkward in my large hands. The wood looks dope though.
Looks good and works great. Keeps coffee hot until you turn the power switch off. Makes what I consider to be 3 American size cups of coffee. Does have a cheap feel when you touch it but like I said it does work great and makes great coffee. Was only$19.95 When I purchased so I think it was a good value.
I've been using Ikea coffee presses for years and they work fine, but I really wanted one with a strainer in the lid. This one is the best I've found. I particularly like the 5-cup/20 oz. size, which is what I bought. The holder is thin metal and can be bent, but I don't think it should be a problem under normal use. The glass seems of nice quality and is easily removed from the frame for cleaning. The only way this could be improved is with the addition of extra mesh screens right in the box. The plunger uses a single layer of fine mesh screen, but it seems to be of fine quality since, between it and the strainer at the spout, I've noticed less grounds per cup. My current favorite coffee press.
We have had it over a month now and I love it. Looking for a less plastic coffee machine that is also SCA certified. Coffee tastes great and it's not oversized so it fits perfectly in our little area under the coffee cups.
Well, absolutely don't put it in the dishwasher. Most items of those nature having a warning embossed on the actual item. It does come with three replacement screens which is a nice feature. And after pulling it out of the dishwasher I found that the discarded packaging had a note on it to "avoid" putting in the dishwasher. Who keeps the packaging when it's just a thin cheap plain cardboard design? I suggest this detail be reworked in manufacturing or packaging. Anyway, I would opt out for either a better product or at the very least the plain stainless version. EDIT: Absolutely don't buy this. If you submerge it in water at all it somehow gets water inside the double wall construction. This is a waste of money, energy, space and material.
Woke up this morning to try my first cup made with this coffee maker ... This coffee maker came to me nicely, commercially, and protectively boxed. The first thing I noticed was the lighter weight of construction, and slimmer style compared to my old beast of a coffee maker I`ve been using for years ( that was on it`s way OUT ) . I would not say this is top of the line, but it`s simplistic, without sacrificing certain capabilities. A good fit when extra counter space may be needed - but not exactly compact, as it makes up to 12 full cups of coffee. Per my added photos, included with the coffee maker is a measuring scoop , and a reusable and washable filter cup , a quick start guide, and a full instruction booklet . I like using a reusable , washable cup filter as I never have to pick up one use filters. The operation panel is clear and easy to use - a simple On/Off button, Clock, and Program button to time a coffee making perfectly. I like that the coffee maker has a visible water level gauge on the side of machine . Good to check to make sure the water is running smoothly and completely through. The included measuring scoop is spot on . One level scoop gave me the full bodied cup I prefer . It keeps coffee hot in the pot for 2 hours - it will auto turn itself off in 2 hours, or can simply press the Off button at any time . Having our coffee staying hot in between cups is ideal, and so is the No Drip feature - I have mornings where I want / need my coffee before the pot is full - I can pull the pot off the plate, and the brewing stops, the coffee stops dripping - no drip drops onto the hot plate, no mess. This coffee maker is very sensible - I see it good for those who like simple and not overly complicated features and style, a 1-2 times a day coffee drinker ( as my husband and I usually are, but take our 1 times very seriously ) , smaller spaces , a first or replacement coffee maker, someone who is not "hard" on their appliances. I did take off 1 star for the price tag. For the more lighter weight construction I would expect to pay a few dollars less - maybe in the $20.00 - $25.00 range , if not less . I believe another brand in this style would sell at that price, or the price that is set for this maker. I am enjoying this maker just as much as my "old beast", and enjoyed my coffee made from it .
Love It!!! Bought it after saw one in my friend's house and had the first experience with this unique taste of cold brew coffee. as a coffee lover myself with an espresso machine in the office, I absolutely love the smooth coffee taste this item brews. Apparently I do have a good taste as I saw Oprah also chose it as one of her favorite things for 2017. The item itself looks amazing, sexy, simple to use and working perfectly fine. definitely catch the eye when placing it on the table, my wife thought I bought some type of an Italian transformer :-) Definitely recommend to give it a try, worth any penny!
Really like this coffee pot. Has some cool functions and choices. The only problem I have is you can not just turn it on to keep it warming. Once the time has ended on the warmer, you have to pour and redrip coffee. There is no way to just turn it on without making more coffee.
So far this coffee make has been a staple in my everyday morning routine. The xl large coffee carafe allows me to make enough coffee for just me or my friends and family too! The sleek stylish design takes up little space on my kitchen counter which is a plus. The reusable filter saves me money but can be a pain to clean at times. However, I found that the filter worked like a charm no grounds in my coffee so the cleaning is definitely not a dealbreaker. The coffee brews coffee that tastes fresh and hot. The warmer function leaves the coffee a little too hot tasting for my liking though others may disagree. Overall, great XL coffee maker!
A while back I got a pour over coffee maker, it was just a porcelain holder for a #2 paper cone with a hole at the bottom, and it was OK. This is definitely an A+. I love the filter, I tried it with some finely ground coffee (though not an espresso grind) and not a speck of coffee got into the coffee. I appreciate that the hot water doesn't touch any plastics, only metal and glass, so I know my coffee is free of contaminants, and it all goes nicely into the dishwasher if I want for easy cleanup. The water goes through the filter a little bit faster than a drip coffee machine, but not too much faster, and my coffee had plenty of flavor to it. I love the styling of the pot, though that is personal preference. The one thing you might not like is that the filter doesn't do great over a single cup of coffee, though it isn't horrible either. Overall, I am absolutely delighted with this coffee maker. J.Ja
I bought the Magicafe 34oz press in 2019. In August the little sleeve nut that holds on the filter assembly broke off. I contacted their customer service [email protected]. They got back to me with message within two days. I sent pics and they said sorry don't have the little nut available. In addition, they don't carry spare parts. They asked when I purchased so they could send replacement. I provided the info assuming that they would send me a new plunger assembly. However within two weeks I received the entire press. Stellar service!
